In 1985, Kristofferson joined fellow country artists Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash in forming the country music supergroup The Highwaymen, and formed a key creative force in the outlaw country music movement that eschewed the Nashville music machine in favor of independent songwriting and producing. In 2004, Kristofferson was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. As an actor, he is known for his roles in Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid (1973), Blume in Love (1973), Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974), A Star Is Born (1976) (which earned him a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor), Convoy (1978), Heaven's Gate (1980) and Blade (1998).
Kristofferson has said that he would like the first three lines of Leonard Cohen's "Bird on the Wire" on his tombstone:
Like a bird on the wire
Like a drunk in a midnight choir
I have tried in my way to be free
Moment of Forever

Was it holy as it was for me?
Did you feel the hand of destiny
That was guiding us together?
You were young enough to dream
I was old enough to learn something new
I'm so glad I got to dance with you
Sometimes when you're cryin', you're happy
Sometimes you're just cryin'
I know. I know.
Come whatever happens now
Ain't it nice to know that dreams still come true
I'm so glad that I was close to you
For a moment of forever.
The song Moment of Forever by Kris Kristofferson talks about a moment of pure love and connection shared between two people. The lyrics ask if this moment was unforgettable for the other person, as it was for the singer. The idea of destiny is mentioned, suggesting that maybe their meeting was meant to be. The age difference between the two individuals is highlighted as he recognizes that both of them had something to learn from the experience. The lyrics are focused on the beauty of the moment they shared and the joy the singer felt by being able to dance with this person.
The chorus talks about how sometimes tears can be a sign of happiness and how one can feel overwhelmed by the moment's beauty. The last verse of the song suggests that even though the moment has passed, it's comforting to know that the memory of their "moment of forever" will remain with them. The song speaks about the transience of life and how it's essential to cherish the moments that make us feel alive.
