Beyond the Surface
Kutless Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Right behind my digital mask
I've been trying to be someone I'm not
All these perfectly fake people push us to insane ideals
They're nothing more than counterfeit images
That push me away, to bleed out the pain
Don't you dare make another move
Put the knife away, that's not what anybody needs
There's a better way than everything now that you see
Stop comparing who you are to who you want to be
Let's step out beyond the surface
Don't give in to everything the world around tells you to be
Open up your mind release yourself
Stop the lying, stop comparing who you are to what you see
Never letting fear hold back the change
And push you away, to bleed out the pain
Don't you dare make another move
Kutless's song Beyond the Surface dives into the themes of social media, self-acceptance, and individuality. The song conveys a powerful message that many people today can relate to. The lyrics express how the pressure to conform to society's standards and ideals can be overwhelming, leading individuals to lose their sense of self and try to be someone they're not. The singer acknowledges that they have been hiding behind a "digital mask," meaning they have been putting on a false persona on social media to fit in and gain acceptance. However, the singer realizes that these fake people in their life are "nothing more than counterfeit images," and they need to step out beyond the surface to uncover their true identity and fulfill their potential.
The chorus of the song urges the listener to put away the knife, a metaphor for self-harm and destructive behavior, and choose a better way. The better way is to stop comparing oneself to others, let go of fear, and embrace individuality. The singer encourages the listener to open up their mind, release themselves from the pressure to fit in, and stop pursuing the unattainable ideals of society. Instead, they should embrace who they are and push themselves beyond the surface to unleash their full potential.
Overall, Kutless's song Beyond the Surface is a powerful reminder to be true to oneself, embrace individuality, and break free from the pressure to conform to society's standards.
