Legacy
Kutless Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Of all the things that shouldn't be
They take you away from all you should be
Don't let it go by as if you agree
Nightmares of the past will fade away
The future of your name is what will stay
Never try to blame the past for everything you say
Do you really want to be just like
The very ones you blame who take you away
From all you should be
Don't just stand by as if you agree
Think of the future and when you are gone
How will you be remembered then
For all time you can be the one who changed the name
The lyrics to Kutless's song "Legacy" speak about the memories of things that shouldn't be, which often take people away from their intended path. The song ultimately encourages the listener to not accept these negative memories as their fate and instead strive to create a positive legacy for themselves. The lyrics state that the nightmares of the past will eventually fade away, and it is the future that should be focused on. It also urges individuals not to blame their past for everything they say or do and instead use their power to change their legacy and create a name for themselves that they would be proud of.
One interpretation of the song is that it speaks to the idea of generational curses, where negative patterns or habits are passed down from one generation to the next. The song encourages breaking free from these cycles and creating a better future for oneself and future generations. Another interpretation is that it speaks to the idea of personal responsibility, where an individual is responsible for their own actions and the legacy they leave behind. This can be seen in lines such as "You have the power you need to change your legacy" and "For all time you can be the one who changed the name."
