Its founders were Sebastián Teysera (lead vocals, frontman and main songwriter), Nicolás Lieutier (bass guitar) and Santiago Butler (guitar) - all three are still part of the band today. The band's first appearance as La Vela Puerca was in a montevidean street party in December 24, 1995. By then, several new members had already joined in. In 1996, frontman Sebastián Teysera presented a demo tape to a band contest. The rest of the band did not become aware of this until they found out they were one of the twenty finalists. A month later, they recieved a phone call saying they had won, and with this they were given 80 hours of free recording session which would be vital for their debut album.
La Vela Puerca released four albums: Deskarado (1998)(1999 released in Europe as "La Vela Puerca"), De Bichos Y Flores (2001), A Contraluz (2004)and El Impulso (2007).
In Germany they're well-known since they've played with Die Ärzte in Germany and Uruguay. In 2006 they're touring again in Europe.
El bandido Salto de Mata

ese bandido salto de mata
si me lo encuentro yo en esta esquina
salgo corriendo por la avenida
why si te pesca dandole cuerda
o ayudando a la gente enferma
te va a dar palo hasta que se borre
puente:
llegó del norte dandole lata
ese bandido salto de mata
toda la gente tiembla de miedo
cuando aparece con su sombrero
latinoamerica de colores
yo mas me acerco mas huelo olores
latinoamerica confundida
por los caminos llenos de vida
si un latino se esconde
me dicen a donde
para que lo pueda traer
si el latino aparece la gente enloquece
no seas el primero en caer
gente bien gente humilde cansada de palo
no vamo a dejarno arrastrar
no te asustes mujer no te ponga a correr
vida mia esto va a terminar

The lyrics to La Vela Puerca's song "El bandido Salto de Mata" speak of a bandit who is feared and notorious. The first two lines of the song warns the listener to be careful because this bandit is dangerous and could kill. The name "Salto de Mata" is a colloquial phrase in Spanish that means "escape" or "get away," implying that this bandit is elusive and difficult to capture. The next two lines suggest that the singer is afraid of encountering the bandit and would run away if they saw him on the street.
The following lines mention that the bandit is brutal towards those who support him, as he beats them until they no longer speak out about poverty and other injustices. The lyrics in the bridge speak of the bandit's origins, stating that he came from the north and instills fear in the locals when he appears with his hat. The last verses discuss the beauty and problems of Latin America, highlighting the confusion caused by a multitude of paths filled with life. The lyrics encourage the listener to resist and not be afraid, especially women, as this situation will come to an end.
