I Can
Led Zeppelin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Want to tell you about the girl I love
My she looks so fine
She's the only one that I been dreamin' of
Maybe someday she will be all mine
I want to tell her that I love her so
I thrill with her every touch
I need to tell her she's the only one I really love
I got a woman, want to ball all day
I got a woman, she won't be true, no
I got a woman, stay drunk all the time
I said I got a little woman and she won't be true

Sunday morning when we go down to church
See the menfolk standin' in line
I said they come to pray to the Lord
With my little girl, looks so fine
In the evening when the sun is sinkin' low
Everybody's with the one they love
I walk the town, keep a-searchin' all around
Lookin' for my street corner girl

I got a woman, want to ball all day
I got a woman, she won't be true, no no
I got a woman, stay drunk all the time
I said I got a little woman and she won't be true

In the bars, with the men who play guitars
Singin', drinkin' and rememberin' the times
My little lover does a midnight shift
She followed around all the time
I guess there's just one thing a-left for me to do
Gonna pack my bags and move on my way
'Cause I got a worried mind sharin' what I thought was mine
Gonna leave her where the guitars play

I got a woman, she won't be true, no no
I got a woman, want to ball all day, yeah, yeah
I got a woman, stay drunk all the time
I got a little woman and she won't be true

(Hey hey what can I do) I said she won't be true

No, yeah, no, yeah, no, yeah, no, yeah (hey, hey, what can I say?)

Ah (hey hey, what can I do) keep on, keep on
(No, no, what can I say?) she won't
Keep on, keep on (hey, hey, what can I do?)
(No, no, what can I say?)
(Hey, hey, what can I do?)
(No, no, what can I say?) hey, hey what can I do, I got a women she won't be true
(Hey, hey, what can I do?) oh oh hear what I said I got a woman wanna bawl all day

(No, no, what can I say?) keep on keep on
(Hey, hey, what can I do?)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Led Zeppelin's song "I Can" detail the singer's complicated love life. The song begins by describing a girl that the singer is in love with, but it is unclear if she reciprocates his feelings. He wants to tell her how he feels but is unsure if she will ever be his.

The second verse introduces another woman that the singer has been involved with. This woman is unreliable, always drunk and cheating on him. Despite this, the singer can't let go of her. He spends his Sundays in church with the girl he loves, but at night he searches for his "street corner girl."

The final verse sees the singer making a decision to move on from his cheating girlfriend. He is going to leave her and "where the guitars play." The song concludes with the repeated phrase "hey hey what can I do," suggesting that the singer is resigned to the fact that he may never be able to find true love.

One interesting fact about "I Can" is that it was originally released as the B-side to the single "Immigrant Song." It was not included on any of Led Zeppelin's studio albums until the 1982 compilation album "Coda." Additionally, this song is one of only two Led Zeppelin tracks to feature John Paul Jones on lead vocals.

I can't quit you baby
So I'm gonna put you down for awhile
I said I can't quit you baby
I guess I gotta put you down for awhile
Said you messed up my happy home
Made me mistreat my only child
Yes sir you did!
Said you know I love you baby
My love for you I could never hide
Oh, you know I love you baby
My love for you I could never hide
Oh when I feel you near me little girl
I know you are my one desire
When you hear me moaning and groaning, baby,
You know it hurts me deep down inside
When you hear me moaning and groaning, baby,
You know it hurts me deep down inside
Oh, when you hear me, honey, baby,
You know you're my one desire
Yes, you are
