They began performing in the early 1980's in alternative spaces such as the Pali-Kao, a squatted factory building in Belleville, Paris. Their first hit single was Marcia Baila off the Rita Mitsouko album, a song about the Argentinian choreographer and dancer Marcia Moretto who had died of cancer in 1981 and with whom they had performed on several occasions. This album was creative and eccentric (produced by Conny Plank, sound engineer and producer of Neu! and Kraftwerk) combining elements of punk, rock, cold electro pop and jazz, and coupled with their colorful, wild, over-the-top image caught the interest of some important anglophone listeners.
American record producer and musician Tony Visconti produced the following two albums, The No Comprendo and Marc et Robert, while polishing and perfecting their sound. The American band Sparks collaborated with them on the latter record and Russell Mael sings lead vocals with Ringer on three tracks, Singing in the Shower, Live in Las Vegas and Hip Kit. These two albums feature both French and English lyrics. The most successful singles were C'est comme ça and Andy.
Jean-Baptiste Mondino directed most of their music videos in the 1980's and Jean-Luc Godard filmed a short documentary Soigne ta droite about the group during the recording of The No Comprendo in 1986.
On Wednesday November 28th 2007, Fred Chichin died from cancer while the band had just cancelled their previous concert dates in Paris. He was only diagnosed with the disease two months before.

How can't believe that dog
I can't even see down the dog
I can't go away
I can't even see down the dog
I can't stroke that dog
I can't see down the dog
I can't see down the dog
I can't leave that tide
I can't see down the dog
That dog was sent to me
I can't see down the dog
Oh basket of chi
I can't see down the dog
Oh better leave at me
Get up shake the sea
Get up make it with me
Get up make these sweaters workers
Get up, things to stick together
Seize with just the scene, well just the scene
I got to pay that dog
Gonna pay the dog, yeah
Better love me
Get up shake the sea
Get up make it with me
Get up make these sweaters workers
Get up, things to stick together
Seize with just the scene, well just the scene
Hey Sam bought the TV to see one basket of chi
The lyrics of Les Rita Mitsouko's song Le Futur N°4 are highly enigmatic and subject to interpretation. Some listeners believe that the song is about a failed relationship, while others see it as a commentary on the way we perceive reality. The repeated line "I can't even see down the dog" could be seen as a metaphor for a situation that is impossible to comprehend or control, while the line "That dog was sent to me" suggests a sense of fate or destiny at play.
The chorus, with its repeated exhortations to "Get up" and "make it with me," has a sense of urgency and desperation that suggests that something important is at stake. The line "Hey Sam bought the TV to see one basket of chi" is also highly puzzling, and its meaning is difficult to discern. It could be a reference to a specific individual or event, or it could be meant as a non sequitur or a deliberate attempt to confuse the listener.
