He soon gained fame due to the power and strength of his voice. The young tenor earned valuable experience and significant recognition while touring on the invitation of soprano Joan Sutherland, making his 1965 U.S. debut in Miami, Florida on her recommendation. His position was solidified in the years between 1966 and 1972, during which Pavarotti first appeared at Milan's seminal La Scala, at other major European houses, and, in 1968, at NYC's Metropolitan Opera. He received great acclaim, particularly working well with Joan Sutherland.
By the mid-70s, the tenor became known worldwide, famed for the brilliance and beauty of his tone, especially into the upper register. His "high C" became one of his trademarks. The late 70s and 80s saw Pavarotti making significant appearances in the world's opera houses and establishing himself as one of the great singers of the era.
Popular stardom came at the 1990 World Cup in Italy with the performances of "Nessun Dorma" (from Turandot) and as one of The Three Tenors in their famed first concert held on the eve of the final match of the tournament (repeated at later Cups). Pavarotti sang together with fellow star tenors Plácido Domingo and José Carreras and brought to the much wider audience hits previously confined to the opera world. Appearances in advertisements and with pop icons in concerts around the world furthered his influence. Pavarotti always maintained his identity as an opera star, unlike many crossover artists.
The later years brought a decline in ability to perform on stage due to a weight gain and lack of mobility. Pavarotti's final appearance in an opera was at the Met in March 2004. The 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy saw him performing for the last time. Pavarotti sang Nessun Dorma, with the crowd as its Chorus, and got a thunderous standing ovation. On September 6, 2007, he died at home in Modena from pancreatic cancer.
La Mia Canzone Al Vento

Vento d?aprile di primavera
Che il volto le sfiorava in un sospiro
Mentre il suo labbro ripeteva giuro
Ma pur l?amore é un vento di follia
Che fugge... come sei fuggita tu.
Vento, vento
Raggiungeremo insieme il firmamento
Dove le stelle brilleranno a cento
E senza alcun rimpianto
Voglio scordarmi un giuramento
Vento, vento
Portami via con te.
Tu passi lieve come una chimera
Vento d?aprile di primavera
Tu che lontano puoi sfirarla ancora
Dille ch?io l?amo e il cuore mio l?implora
Dille il ch?io fremo dalla gelosia
Solo al pensiero che la baci tu.
Vento. Vento
Portami via con te
Tu che conosci tutte le mie pene
Dille che ancor le voglio tanto bene
Sotto le stelle, chiare
Forse ritornerá l?amore
Vento, vento
Portami via con te.
Sussurra il vento come quella sera
Perché non torni é primavera.
The song La Mia Canzone al Vento by Luciano Pavarotti is a beautiful Italian ballad that talks about the beauty and transience of love, and the way the wind can carry away our deepest longings and desires. The song begins by describing how the wind whispers softly, just like it did on that evening in the springtime, when the singer's love was near but then disappeared, as if carried away by the breeze. This love was a fleeting, passionate thing, like the wind itself, which comes and goes without warning.
As the song continues, the singer addresses the wind, asking it to take him away with it, far beyond this earth and into the heavens, where the stars shine bright and there are no regrets. He confesses that he wants to forget about the promises he made and the love he lost, and just let the wind carry him away into the unknown.
The singer then asks the wind to carry his message to his love, wherever she may be, telling her that he still loves her deeply and his heart is crying out for her. He admits that he is jealous of the wind, which can still touch her gently and whisper to her, and he hopes that one day their love will be rekindled under the bright stars of the night sky.
Overall, La Mia Canzone al Vento is a beautiful and poignant song that captures the bittersweet, ephemeral nature of love, and the way it can be carried away by the wind like a delicate flower petal. The singer's yearning for his lost love is palpable, and the imagery of the wind adds a haunting, otherworldly quality to the song.

Sussurra il vento come quella sera
The wind whispers like it did that evening
Vento d'aprile di primavera
April wind of spring
Che il volto le sfiorava in un sospiro
That softly touched her face as she sighed
Mentre il suo labbro ripeteva giuro
While her lips repeated a vow
Ma pur l'amore é un vento di follia
But love is a crazy wind
Che fugge... come sei fuggita tu.
That flees...just like you did
Vento, vento
Wind, wind
Portami via con te
Take me away with you
Raggiungeremo insieme il firmamento
Together we will reach the sky
Dove le stelle brilleranno a cento
Where the stars will shine brilliantly
E senza alcun rimpianto
And without any regret
Voglio scordarmi un giuramento
I want to forget a vow
Tu passi lieve come una chimera
You pass by lightly like a dream
Tu che lontano puoi sfirarla ancora
You who can still touch her from afar
Dille ch'io l'amo e il cuore mio l'implora
Tell her I love her and my heart implores her
Dille il ch'io fremo dalla gelosia
Tell her I shiver with jealousy
Solo al pensiero che la baci tu.
Just at the thought of you kissing her
Tu che conosci tutte le mie pene
You who know all my pains
Dille che ancor le voglio tanto bene
Tell her I still love her so much
Sotto le stelle, chiare
Under the clear stars
Forse ritornerá l'amore
Perhaps love will return
Perché non torni é primavera.
Why don't you come back, it's springtime.
