Maria Rita began to sing professionally aged 24, even though she began to sing since she was 14. Her first CD, 'Maria Rita', launched her career, with the first cut on her first album, "A Festa (The Party)", written by Milton Nascimento, a Brazilian singer-songwriter. The CD was platinum and was a hit worldwide. After that album she became an international star. Her mother's career as a renowned singer had a major influence in Maria Rita's life as a singer; She was always conscious of being the single daughter of a great singer. Despite having her mother's vocal DNA, Maria Rita developed her own jazzy vocal style, influenced by singers, like among others, Ella Fitzgerald. She won the 2004 Latin Grammy Award for Best New Artist in the General Area. Her debut album, 'Maria Rita', won the Best MPB (Popular Brasilian Music) Album award of that year. Rita is pronounced "HEE-taaa".

Leva no seu bumbar, me leva
Leva no teu bumbar, me leva
Leva que quero ver meu pai
Caminho bordado à fé, caminho das águas
Me leva que quero ver meu pai
The lyrics of Maria Rita's song "Caminho das Águas" convey a deep longing to reconnect with the singer's father. The repetitive line "Leva no teu bumbar, me leva" is a plea to be taken on a journey, symbolizing the desire to be reunited with her father. The use of the word "bumbar" suggests a rhythmic movement or sound, perhaps evoking the rhythm of a boat sailing through water.
The song refers to a "caminho das águas," which can be understood as the path of the waters or a river. This path is depicted as adorned with faith, suggesting a spiritual or symbolic journey. The repetition of the line "Caminho bordado à fé, caminho das águas" emphasizes the significance of this spiritual voyage in the singer's quest to see her father again.
The verses also mention a boat, which moves slowly and seemingly no longer desires to reach its destination. This imagery evokes a sense of resignation and acceptance, as if the singer has become accustomed to the solitude and yearning for her father while surrounded by the calming presence of water.
In the last stanza, the mention of a beautiful brunette with longing eyes represents a companion or guide for the singer, reassuring her that they are getting closer to their destination. The inclusion of the lines "Na roda cantar com 'ocê, ouvir a zabumba" suggests the joy of singing and dancing together in a circle, accompanied by the rhythmic sound of a zabumba, a type of drum.
Overall, "Caminho das Águas" is a poignant song that expresses a heartfelt longing to be reunited with a loved one, while also exploring themes of spirituality and finding solace in the journey itself.
