In the past, band members dressed in outlandish makeup and costumes, and engaged in intentionally shocking behavior both onstage and off. Their lyrics often received criticism for their anti-religious sentiment and references to sex, violence and drugs, while their live performances were frequently called offensive and obscene. On several occasions, protests and petitions led to the group being blocked from performing, with at least three US states passing legislation banning the group from performing at state-owned venues. They released a number of platinum-selling albums, including Antichrist Superstar (1996) and Mechanical Animals (1998). These albums, along with their highly stylized music videos and worldwide touring, brought public recognition to Marilyn Manson. In 1999, news media, infamously, falsely blamed the band for influencing the perpetrators of the Columbine High School massacre.
As this controversy began to wane throughout the 2000s, so did the band's mainstream popularity. Despite this, Jon Wiederhorn of MTV, in June 2003, referred to Marilyn Manson as "the only true artist today". Marilyn Manson is widely regarded as being one of the most iconic and controversial figures in rock music, with the band and its lead singer influencing numerous other groups and musicians, both in metal-associated acts and also in wider popular culture. VH1 ranked Marilyn Manson as the seventy-eighth best rock band on their 100 Great Artists of Hard Rock. They were inducted into the Kerrang! Hall of Fame in 2000, and have been nominated for four Grammy Awards. In the U.S., the band has seen ten of its releases debut in the top ten, including two number-one albums. Marilyn Manson have sold in excess of 50 million records worldwide.

It's not rain, you rapist werewolves
It's God pissing down on you
We'll die alone
Cause I'll break off my own arms
Sharpen my bones
Stab you once for each time I thought of you
Trying to take something
It's better to push something away that's slipping
Than to risk being dragged down
If you want to hit bottom
Don't bother to try taking me with you
I won't answer if you call
Two heartbeats ended in hell
Trying to break your fall
This isn't a mob, won't need to change the names
Everyone around you
Has murdered someone, something sacred
Isn't one nail without dirt under it
Isn't any white cotton panties that aren't soaked and stained red
It's better to push something away that's slipping
Than to risk being dragged down
If you want to hit bottom
Don't bother to try taking me with you
I won't answer if you call
Two heartbeats ended in hell
Trying to break your fall
Into the fire
Into the fire
Into the fire
Into the fire
Fire, oh
Into the fire
Fire, oh
Into the fire
Fire, oh
Into the fire
Fire, oh
The lyrics of Marilyn Manson's song "Into the Fire" talks about a sense of betrayal, anger and frustration towards someone who has failed to live up to expectations. Manson paints the picture of a miserable scene where "God is pissing down" on "rapist werewolves", implying that the person has done unspeakable things and deserves to be punished. The singer in the song is clearly filled with rage towards this person, and he declares that he will break off his own arms, sharpen his bones and stab the person for each time he thought of them. This line shows the extent of the singer's overwhelming emotions, which he cannot shake off, leading him to comparisons of God committing an act of violence on the rapist werewolves.
The chorus of the song emphasizes the singer's determination to not be dragged down by the person he is angry with. The line "it's better to push something away that's slipping than to risk being dragged down" implies that the singer is better off alone than to be in the company of someone who might potentially bring him down. He declares that he won't answer if the person calls because he cannot be swayed from his decision. The final line of the chorus "trying to break your fall" suggests the person had been relying on the singer for support.
The final part of the song "Into the Fire" serves as a conclusion to the singer's rant of anger and frustration. No matter how it ends, he declares that the person will always be remembered as a villain. The line "two heartbeats ended in hell" refers to the two of them, likely the singer and the person he is ranting about, being condemned to eternal damnation for their actions. In the end, the singer is resolved to let the person go, and that they can face their own hellfire.
