In the past, band members dressed in outlandish makeup and costumes, and engaged in intentionally shocking behavior both onstage and off. Their lyrics often received criticism for their anti-religious sentiment and references to sex, violence and drugs, while their live performances were frequently called offensive and obscene. On several occasions, protests and petitions led to the group being blocked from performing, with at least three US states passing legislation banning the group from performing at state-owned venues. They released a number of platinum-selling albums, including Antichrist Superstar (1996) and Mechanical Animals (1998). These albums, along with their highly stylized music videos and worldwide touring, brought public recognition to Marilyn Manson. In 1999, news media, infamously, falsely blamed the band for influencing the perpetrators of the Columbine High School massacre.
As this controversy began to wane throughout the 2000s, so did the band's mainstream popularity. Despite this, Jon Wiederhorn of MTV, in June 2003, referred to Marilyn Manson as "the only true artist today". Marilyn Manson is widely regarded as being one of the most iconic and controversial figures in rock music, with the band and its lead singer influencing numerous other groups and musicians, both in metal-associated acts and also in wider popular culture. VH1 ranked Marilyn Manson as the seventy-eighth best rock band on their 100 Great Artists of Hard Rock. They were inducted into the Kerrang! Hall of Fame in 2000, and have been nominated for four Grammy Awards. In the U.S., the band has seen ten of its releases debut in the top ten, including two number-one albums. Marilyn Manson have sold in excess of 50 million records worldwide.

In all my past lives I played an asshole
Now I found you, it's almost too late
And this earth seems obliviating
We are trembling in our crutches
High and dead, our skin is glass
And I'm so empty here without you
I know it's the last day on Earth
We'll be together while the planet dies
I know it's the last day on Earth
We'll never say goodbye
And the dogs slaughter each other softly
Love burns its casualties
We are damaged provider modules
Spill the seeds at our children's feet
And I'm so empty here without you
I know they want me dead
I know it's the last day on Earth
We'll be together while the planet dies
I know it's the last day on Earth
We'll never say goodbye
I know it's the last day on Earth
We'll be together while the planet dies
I know it's the last day on Earth
We'll never say goodbye
I know it's the last day on Earth
We'll be together while the planet dies
I know it's the last day on Earth
We'll never say goodbye
I know it's the last day on Earth
We'll be together while the planet dies
I know it's the last day on Earth
We'll never say goodbye
We'll never say goodbye
We'll never say goodbye
The lyrics of Marilyn Manson's song The Last Day On Earth depict a sense of desperation and impending doom. The opening lines, "Yesterday was a million years ago, in all my past lives I played an asshole," suggest feelings of regret and a yearning to make amends before it's too late. The singer seems to have found someone that they deeply care for, but it's almost too late because the earth is deteriorating. The line "this earth seems obliviating" suggests that the earth is collapsing or ceasing to exist, while the metaphor of "trembling in our crutches" implies that humanity is helpless and vulnerable.
The next several lines create an image of fragility and emptiness, as the singer describes how our skin is like glass and they feel so empty without the one they love. There's a sense of impending violence or danger, as indicated by the line "I know they want me dead." This all culminates in the repeated chorus, where the singer affirms that they know it's the last day on earth, but they'll be together with their loved one until the end.
Overall, the lyrics of The Last Day On Earth evoke a sense of regret and longing, coupled with an overwhelming sense of finality and apocalypse. It's a haunting reflection on the end of the world, and the desire to hold onto the ones we love.
