His breakthrough in music came with the album "Mit Pfefferminz bin ich dein Prinz" ("With peppermint, I'm your prince") in 1978.
Müller-Westernhagen's music is shaped through his concise voice and shouting passages. His texts are very direct and provoking, e.g. "Dicke" ("Fat people"), but also social critical texts like "Freiheit" (freedom) are included in his emotional repertoire.

Vater Unser
The song “Vater Unser” by Marius Müller-Westernhagen talks about different situations where it becomes too late to do anything. The song suggests that if we can’t communicate, believe, fight, or hope together anymore, then it is too late to save the relationship. Similarly, if we can’t laugh, argue anymore, breathe, or be productive, then it is too late for us to change the direction of our lives. The song reflects a sense of urgency and helplessness that arise when something is irrevocably lost.
The song begins with a metaphorical reference to a singing idiot on stage who threatens to perform an encore upon the completion of the original performance, which indicates a shallow and repetitive life without real substance. The next verse describes a wounded soldier reciting the Lord’s Prayer, an allusion to the transience of life and inevitability of death. The chorus then repeats the sentiment that it is too late for anything to change in these situations.
The song acts as a warning to listeners to take action before it is too late, whether in relationships or in life. The powerful lyrics are impactful and emotional, and the way they are sung captures the urgency and desperation of the message. The message of the song is timeless and universal, as it speaks to the human experience of loss and regret.
