For the Olympic Games of Athens 2004 she collaborated with Sting for the duet "A Thousand Years", released on the official pop album of the Athens Olympics Unity, where fado is sung in both English and Portuguese.
Mariza is considered by many as a more contemporary follower of Amalia Rodrigues, and has covered a number of her songs.
In 2003 she became the "Winner in the Europe category" of the BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music.

Anéis Do Meu Cabelo
Mariza Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
No dia do meu enterro
Diz a terra, que não coma
Os anéis do meu cabelo
Já não digo que viesses
Cobrir de rosas meu rosto
Ou que num choro dissesses
Nem te lembro que beijasses
Meu corpo delgado e belo
Mas que sempre me guardasses
Os anéis do meu cabelo
Nem te lembro que beijasses
Meu corpo delgado e belo
Mas que sempre me guardasses
Os anéis do meu cabelo
Os anéis do meu cabelo
In Mariza's song "Anéis Do Meu Cabelo," the lyrics contain a message about the importance of the memories that we hold onto from past relationships. The singer is addressing a former lover, asking them to remember to keep the memory of her alive by not allowing the earth to consume the rings from her hair on the day of her funeral. The singer seems to have accepted that their former lover has moved on and is no longer in love with them. They do not ask for flowers or for any other sort of tribute, but instead, they request a small but meaningful gesture of keeping a piece of her with them.
The repetition of the lines "Nem te lembro que beijasses Meu corpo delgado e belo Mas que sempre me guardasses Os anéis do meu cabelo" creates an almost haunting effect, emphasizing the importance of the rings as a symbol of remembrance. The imagery of the rings in the hair is a metaphor for the memories and emotions that the singer wishes to be remembered. The use of the word "guardasses" or "kept" adds to this metaphor within the lyrics.

Se passares pelo adro
If you pass by the churchyard
No dia do meu enterro
on the day of my burial
Diz a terra, que não coma
tell the earth not to consume
Os anéis do meu cabelo
the rings in my hair
Já não digo que viesses
I no longer ask you to come
Cobrir de rosas meu rosto
to cover my face with roses
Ou que num choro dissesses
or say in tears
A qualquer do teu desgosto
to anyone of your sorrow
Nem te lembro que beijasses
I don't remember you kissing
Meu corpo delgado e belo
my slender and beautiful body
Mas que sempre me guardasses
but that you always keep
Os anéis do meu cabelo
the rings in my hair
Nem te lembro que beijasses
I don't remember you kissing
Meu corpo delgado e belo
my slender and beautiful body
Mas que sempre me guardasses
but that you always keep
Os anéis do meu cabelo

Wow (again) I really do see her feeling the sadness and the compassion for this sadness, of the world. That's why O Gente de Minha Terra is so perfect for her.

I miss this Mariza. Once I thought this was one of her weakest songs on the Fado Curvo album but now I'm amazed. She is shockingly good.

@trazise (direct translation) If you pass by the churchyard, on the day of my burial tell the earth not to eat the rings in my hair. I wont ask that you cover, with roses my face Nor that crying, you would tell, anyone of your grief. i wont remind you to kiss my slim and beautiful body but that forever you'd remember the rings in my hair
