Mia was born in 1947 in Bagnara Calabra (province of Reggio Calabria, southern Italy), but soon she moved to Rome with her sister (Loredana Bertè) and her friend Renato Zero. Both of them would eventually become successful singers too.
She recorded her first records as Mimì Bertè, but she soon decided to change her name to the more appealing Mia Martini.
Her biggest hits were "Piccolo Uomo", which was recorded in several languages, "Almeno tu nell'universo", which is considered her masterpiece and has been covered by several famous Italian singers including Mina and Elisa, and "Minuetto" among many others.
She represented Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest twice: in 1977 with "Libera (song)" (13th out of 18), and in 1992 with "Rapsodia" (4th out of 23).
Her career ended tragically in 1995 when she was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her apartment at Cardano al Campo, near Milan.

Io straniera
Mia Martini Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Anticamente ho sognato di più
Il tuo viso di sera mai
Perde luce luce - tu vedrai
Io, io! – io straniera non mi fermerò
Io straniera – io! .......... Ti aspetto qui
The lyrics of Mia Martini's song "Io straniera" are about a foreigner who has come to a new place looking for peace. The first verse talks about how she has slept there, but as a foreigner, she feels out of place. She had dreams of seeing the person's face in the evening, but now that she is there, she sees that the light of their face fades - this could mean that the excitement of being in a new place fades quickly. The foreigner hopes to find peace in this new place, but at the same time, she might suffer a bit because she is not familiar with the surroundings. The second verse talks about how she has found solace in the cliffs nearby. She prays with her voice, which breaks against the cliffs, and sees a seagull sleeping in the air as a representation of her soul. She says that she will suffer silently and alone as a foreigner.
