Mia was born in 1947 in Bagnara Calabra (province of Reggio Calabria, southern Italy), but soon she moved to Rome with her sister (Loredana Bertè) and her friend Renato Zero. Both of them would eventually become successful singers too.
She recorded her first records as Mimì Bertè, but she soon decided to change her name to the more appealing Mia Martini.
Her biggest hits were "Piccolo Uomo", which was recorded in several languages, "Almeno tu nell'universo", which is considered her masterpiece and has been covered by several famous Italian singers including Mina and Elisa, and "Minuetto" among many others.
She represented Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest twice: in 1977 with "Libera (song)" (13th out of 18), and in 1992 with "Rapsodia" (4th out of 23).
Her career ended tragically in 1995 when she was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her apartment at Cardano al Campo, near Milan.

Rotativa
Mia Martini Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Rotativa, ruota gigante
Rotativa, ruota gigante
Rotativa, ruota gigante
Ruota motore, ruota che vè
Un ora, un minuto
Ti butta di quà e poi di la
The song "Rotativa" by Mia Martini speaks to the cyclical nature of life and the transience of our most cherished possessions and experiences. The lyrics touch on the ways in which individuals sometimes feel powerless against the relentless passage of time and the impermanence of human connections. The first verse finds the singer feeling small and inconsequential, as though he is at the mercy of a world that is much bigger than him. He tends to a beautiful rose in his heart, but knows that the rotating wheel of life is likely to snatch it away from him. In the second verse, we see an individual trying to fight against the stream, but eventually giving in to its flow and being carried away. He longs to find a safe haven, but knows that the rotating wheel will take away everything that he holds dear. The third verse speaks to the nature of protest and social change. Even when the people rise up and take to the streets, their anger and passion may ultimately be rendered impotent by the indifferent turning of the wheel.
The repeated refrain of "Rotativa, ruota gigante, ruota motore, ruota che va" emphasizes the relentlessness of life's cycle and the helplessness that individuals can feel in the face of it. The repeating imagery of roses, shores, and anger serves to further illuminate the ephemeral nature of our experiences and possessions. The song is poignant and melancholy, yet also reflective and philosophical.

The rose, the shore, the anger
Volarono al vento così
Flew away with the wind like this
Son come castelli di sabbia
They are like sand castles
Che ognuno di noi costruì
That each one of us built
E mentre si và alla deriva
And while we drift away
Ci resta un ricordo finchè
We are left with a memory until
Non cade
It doesn't fall
Into the rotary press that takes the memory away with it
