@@purplefood1 I think most people would know that to be fair.. Lidl and Aldi are both very close to me and I really like them both. I wouldn't do a main shop there but some stuff they do is much better than the other 'higher end' supermarkets. Same with Iceland. I go into those stores for certain items (and usually end up buying considerably more).. Morrisons is also within a 5 min drive so I tend to go there for a main shop.

Lidl is a German supermarket chain for paupers. If you really want to know what V.A.T. is, it's a tax system forced on the UK as a condition of joining the EEC (now EU), which, fortunately, we have now left, but we still have it. It is not a sales tax. We used to have Purchase Tax, where certain things deemed to be “luxuries” (like televisions or cars) were taxed at the point of sale to final consumers, at various rates depending upon how “luxurious” they were deemed to be. This was quite simple: only businesses involved in selling goods or services to consumers were involved. V.A.T. involves vast amounts of time and effort by every business in the supply chain (a) charging the tax to the next business in the chain at various rates (including zero) and handing that over to HMRC, and (b) claiming back the tax that they have paid over to their suppliers who have charged them V.A.T. on what they have bought from them and (c) making a return for HMRC every three months. For example, if you are a wholesale book seller, books being zero rated and not taxable, and all you do is sell books to shops, unless you charge extra for shipping to your customers, you won't be collecting any tax at all, and HMRC are simply going to refund you every quarter for all the V.A.T. you have been charged for everything except the books themselves during that three months (i.e. up to four months after you have paid it out). You, the book wholesaler, have been obliged to engage in and incur the cost of detailed accounting for your purchases and sales, and deprived of some of your money for a considerable period for no actual reason at all. That is V.A.T., and we should abolish it now.

Value Added Tax (VAT), in the UK there are currently 3 rates Standard (20%), Reduced (5%) and Zero rate.

Most goods and services have a Standard rate of VAT, however things like heating fuel or home energy improvement have a reduced rate (solar and heat pump installs have just been moved from reduced rate to zero rate) Then zero rate VAT for essential food items,children's clothing, heath and safety equipment etc. There are some "interesting" anomalies however, for example a takeway offering cooked and hot food has to pay VAT, however if it isn't served hot, it is zero VAT. This is why takeaway foods in Greggs, for example, aren't kept hot because then they'd had to charge you VAT(20%) on top!! And then my Wellington boots, if I get them steel toed, I don't have any VAT to pay on them, making them cheaper than their non-steel toed equivalents plus the added protection of not accidentally running a pitch fork through your toes!

It is quite simple really compared to the likes of Ireland, with different tiers (Standard rate 23%, 2nd Tier 13.5%, 3rd Tier 9%, 4th Tier 4.8% and Zero rate)

I'm not surprised that you are not familiar with VAT (Value Added Tax), i.e. sales tax, it's already figured into the price of the product so you don't actually see the tax when you pay for it unlike our sales tax here in America. It's not just the UK that uses VAT when I was stationed in Germany and Italy (back in the 1980s) they also used VAT. I only knew about it because as a retired USAF MSgt we could get reimbursed the VAT, which was 11% percent at that time. While it didn't make sense to get reimbursed the tax for smaller purchases (paper work hassle) for larger purchases like a car, TV, or stereo it was certainly worth while to go through the trouble of claiming the VAT.

Here in the UK we have V.A.T. (Value Added Tax). If you go to the shops and buy an item for say £1 then 20p of that pound is V.A.T. which goes to HMRC (Her Majesties Revenue & Customs). VAT = Value Added Tax, what we have in place of sales tax. I can't agree with those who are saying that the reason that the price shown in shops is the price actually paid is because we have VAT and not sales tax. The reason is that shops are legally required to show the final price (i.e. the price inclusive of tax) and cannot add taxes at the till. Why shops in the US are allowed to display prices exclusive of tax and then add the tax at the point of payment is beyond me.
Lidl is the name of a cheap discount supermarket chain.
Yeovil is the name of a town. Why that town was chosen to be mentioned I don't know as it has no associations with poor people or Lidl.

You have a lot to learn my friend if you're trying to keep up with UK humour. But VAT = value added tax (basic tax), LIDL = a low lost supermarket chain where all the 'poor' might shop, as well as others.
