Bridge over trouble water
Nana Mouskouri Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When you're weary, feelin' small
When tears are in your eyes, I'll dry them all
I'm on your side, when times get rough
And friends just can't be found

Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

When you're down and out, when you're on the street
When evening falls so hard, I will comfort you
I'll take your part, when darkness comes
And pain is all around

Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

Sail on silver girl, sail on by
Your time has come to shine, all your dreams are on their way
See how they shine, oh if you need a friend
I'm sailing right behind

Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind

Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind, oh

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song "Bridge Over Troubled Water" by Nana Mouskouri speaks about a relationship between two people where one person offers their unwavering support to the other in times of trouble. The lyrics begin with the singer stating that they will be there for the other person when they are feeling exhausted and small. The singer assures their loved one that they will dry their tears and be by their side through the rough times when friends are nowhere to be found.

The chorus of the song compares the singer's love to a "bridge over troubled water." This metaphor represents the singer's unwavering support to the other person through their tough times. A bridge is a connecting structure that lays across a troubled water body, allowing people to go from one side to the other. The singer will become the bridge and provide an anchor in times of turmoil.

The lyrics then go on to say that when the other person is "down and out" and "on the street," the singer will comfort them. The singer offers hope to the other person and promises to be there through the darkest times when everything seems bleak. The song ends with the singer assuring the other person that they will ease their mind when they are in trouble.

I remember this was the first version of this song I heard back during my Board exam study leave, on a radio program. Internet was not such an easy thing to access then, however, somehow I got wind of the name "Simon and Garfunkel". 6 years later, a student of literature, I finally get back that original version. Thank you Anjan! Thank You for bringing back the memories!
