The Story
Norah Jones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'll pretend my heart's not on fire
If you steal my true love's name
Broke down subway in this city of spires
Tape your picture over his in the frame

We'll imagine we're sleeping revolvers
Shotgun wedding in a strange SoHo
Our chambers hold silvery collars
Gun down werewolves wherever we go
We gun down werewolves wherever we go

Midnight phone calls in the back of a Mustang
Creased white pages torn right from the spine
Kissed my neck with a crooked, cracked fang
You always hoped one day you'd be mine

Threw our fathers on funeral pyres
I'm not sure that we were playing a game
Busted gasket in a field full of liars
No one noticed we set five boroughs aflame
No one noticed we set five boroughs aflame

Young blood
Young bone
Old ghosts
Go home

Band of gold with a diamond implied
You wrote letters that you never sent
I made promises I'll always deny
Now we'll never know what the other meant

Watch is ticking like a heartbeat gone berserk
Lost the chance to wind the key
Roosters are nothing but clucking clockwork
Our fears are only what we tell them to be
Our fears are only what we tell them to be

Drown the last of our matches
Burn the rest of each other
You were strongest when I ached for breath
Through the thick of smoke we'll finally smother

[Repeat x5]
Young blood
Young bone

Old ghosts
Go home

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Young Blood" by Norah Jones depicts a forbidden love affair between two people. The first two lines imply that the singer is trying to hide her emotions to protect herself from being hurt. The next few lines suggest that the two of them are engaged in some kind of dangerous and thrilling activity, like a game of pretend. They act as though they are revolvers and live in a fantasy world where they shoot werewolves. The concept of the werewolf is a metaphor for a hidden, or wild, part of themselves that they feel they need to kill.

The second verse takes us further into the relationship's toxicity, with references to midnight phone calls in the back of a Mustang, and the metaphor of "throwing fathers on funeral pyres." The final feeling of the song is one of regret and loss. The singer and her lover have destroyed their connection, leaving nothing but the remains of a smoldering relationship. The last verse might also suggest that the singer and her lover are fearful of their love, and that they prefer to remain in a state of despair rather than confront their fears and insecurities head-on.

I don't know how to begin
Cause the story has been told before
I will sing along i suppose
I guess it's just how it goes

And now those sprangs in the air
I don't go down anywhere
I guess it's just how it goes
The stories have all been told before

But if you don't char
The light won't hit your eye
And the moon won't rise before it's time
🎵🎶🎵🎶
But if you don't char
The light won't hit your eye
And the moon won't rise before it's time

But I don't know how it will end
With all those records playin'
I guess it's just how it goes
The stories have all been told before
I guess it's just how it goes
The stories have all been told before
I guess it's just how it goes

I don't know how to begin
Cause the story has been told before
I will sing along I suppose
I guess it's just how it goes

And now those springs in the air
I don't go out anywhere
I guess it's just how it goes
The stories have all been told before

But if you don't try
The light won't hit your eye
And the moon won't rise
Or fall inside

But if you don't try
The light won't hit your eye
And the moon won't rise
Or fall inside

I don't know how it will end
With all those records playin'
I guess it's just how it goes

I could hear this song on the loop, over and over again, and i never ever have enough, this it's so mellow and beautiful, and i LOVE Wong Kar Wai' s film (and other of his films) and absolutely adore Norah. Although the movie it's so perfect it moves so much strong feelings and scratches old wounds, and i can't watch it without bursting into tears.

It's Cat Power smoking a cigarette with Jude Law after some time they haven't seen each other. But the beauty is that the atmosphere is created precisely by his knowing
how to mix these wonderful artists with music that only he would choose ! Wong Kar Wai .
