Origins
O Rappa got their start in 1993, when Jamaican reggae artist Papa Winnie arrived in Brazil for a series of show and needed a back up band to support him. Four people were immediately picked: Nelson Meirelles, a well-known Rio de Janeiro indie producer; Marcelo Lobato, former member of África Gumbe; Alexandre (Xandão) Menezes, a musician with African influences; and Marcelo Yuka, a prolific songwriter and member of KMD-5 at the time. After the shows with Winnie, the foursome decided to keep the band going and added a vocalist and fifth member, Marcelo Falcão, recruited through an ad in Rio’s main newspaper. In 1994, they released their first album, O Rappa, on the Warner label.
Tragedy
In 2001, Marcelo Lobato who was originally on keyboard had to take over drum duties after the band’s original drummer and main songwriter, Marcelo Yuka, was shot multiple times during a robbery near his house in Rio, which severely compromised movement in both his legs and one of his arms. Yuka has been the biggest contributor of the band's social projects for years, even after turning paralytic. He is currently working on other music projects such as F.Ur.T.O.

Sentimento
O Rappa Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
The lyrics of "Sentimento" by O Rappa delve into the complexities of love and the deep emotions that come with it. The opening line, "O amor é um mar difícil, Tão fácil de se ver e admirar," paints a vivid picture of love being like a vast and challenging sea, both easy to observe and appreciate yet also fraught with difficulties and depths that may not readily be visible. Love is compared to an "artifício," suggesting that it is a construct or device, a concept that is both eternal and unchangeable.
The repetition of the phrase "Guardo tanto tempo em mim, Tudo só pra te mostrar" emphasizes the idea of holding onto deep feelings for someone, with the intention of revealing the depth of these emotions at the right moment. There is a sense of anticipation and build-up, as the singer hints at the belief that it will all be worthwhile in the end. This sentiment is reinforced by the line "Que vai valer a pena de verdade," indicating a strong belief in the ultimate value and significance of the love being held inside.
The repeated lines about love being the singer's primary interest and focus, "Que o amor é tudo o que me interessa," underline the central theme of the song. Despite the challenges and complexities of love, the singer finds solace and purpose in the depths of their feelings. The repetition of these sentiments throughout the song serves to reinforce the idea that love is a driving force, a fundamental aspect of the singer's existence that cannot be ignored or diminished.
The closing lines, with their insistence on the enduring nature of love and its profound impact, "Que o amor, que o amor, Que o amor, que o amor," reiterate the power of love as a force that transcends time and circumstance. The intense emotions and unwavering dedication expressed in the lyrics suggest a deep, abiding connection between the singer and their love interest, portraying love as a transformative and essential part of their lives. Overall, the lyrics of "Sentimento" by O Rappa paint a rich and nuanced picture of love as a powerful and enduring force that shapes and defines the singer's existence.
