Lovely Rhetoric. Though it loses it's persuasive power when one considers that Satan only speaks because God himself created him and gave him life.
God granted him and his host their former splendor.
God drove them down in their defeat, yer let them find a not-then-intolerable place in hell, and I believe there was a hope of reconciliation if only they had abandoned their wretched pride.

In yet the arch-rebel and his band persisted, and as Milton notes in the very beginning, their continued revolt and war over men and women's souls only serves to glorify God the more. For at some point in man's life, he may well find himself wrestling with despair when we consider our circumstance: Bound by our self-destructive consumption, our self-chained enslavement to our own urges, obsessions, lusts and conceits ,wronging ourselves, our neighbors, and our mutual Creator, doomed by justice to death in this world and the hereafter, and unable to rescue ourselves from this madness by our own might or mind.

Yet, here is where the work of God begins. Where we have not the means to save ourselves, grace meets the repentant sinner and makes a saint of him through faith. Charity quickens the fallen heart to adoration and willful obedience, evinced by acts in love. Hope gives rest to the despairing, whilst faith and wisdom build a man that he may faithfully love and serve God and his neighbor the more effectively as he grows in life.

In following the arch-traitor, man sought liberation and enslaved himself, by cutting himself off from God and leaving himself powerless to overcome his own sinful desires, over which domain the prince of sin reigns as master, and both are damned by justice's own verdict. Through Christ's death on the cross, man may be reconciled to God, have his blood debt atoned for in God's own blood, and in death find joy, returning to a God who unlike the pretender is not content to be known as our master, but as our Father.

Amazing and inspiring speech. Paradise Lost is a great book.

Wow. Jeremy Irons is nailed it so well. His voice sounds really sinister, which is obviously why Disney gave him the role of Scar in The Lion King.

Better than to serve hypocrites 🥁🎶😊🥂

Yeah, that pretty much sums it all up. It being a life of praising and praying, hoping for an eternity on heaven's Elysium plains or to live. By living this life to it's very fullest, and sharing the happiness of freedom.

Do you happen to have this speech without the sound in the background? Or know where I can get it?

Book One proposes first in brief the whole
subject of man's disobedience, and the
loss thereupon of Paradise wherein
he was placed.

The master

That my friends is prideful arrogance. He wanted something he could not have. He was a creation, not the creator.

Why not be both?

Cordyceps

@Nicholas Clarke Because he can't, no matter what he tried. At the end of the day, Satan is nothing more than a bitter, envious being whose pride drives him even further into depravity. The only thing you could say he created are his daughter Sin and his son/grandson (don't ask) Death
