"I wish there was an actual story for this song. The whole time we were writing and rehearsing at home, I was in this state where I wouldnât come out or go out unless it was to write with the guys. I spent so much time alone in my apartment that I think it started to mess with me and just make me really sad. One day, I went to practice and Taylor was playing this song. It was another one of his. It hit me and I just started writing whatever came to mind. âAll I Wantedâ almost didnât make the record. I canât remember why we didnât think it would work. We wouldâve been pissed right now if it wasnât there.â - Hayley Williams
All I Wanted
Paramore Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'll beg you nice from my knees
And when the world treats you way too fairly
Well, it's a shame I'm a dream
All I wanted was you
All I wanted was you
I think I'll pace my apartment a few times
And fall asleep on the couch
And wake up early to black-and-white reruns
That escaped from my mouth (oh, oh)
All I wanted was you
All I wanted was you
All I wanted was you
All I wanted was you
I could follow you to the beginning
Just to relive the start
And maybe then we'd remember to slow down
At all of our favorite parts
All I wanted was you
All I wanted was you
All I wanted was you
All I wanted was you
All I wanted was you
The lyrics to "All I Wanted" by Paramore express a yearning for an unrequited love. The first verse reads, "Think of me when you're out, when you're out there. I'll beg you nice from my knees. And when the world treats you way too fairly, well it's a shame I'm a dream." These lines demonstrate the singer's desperation to be thought of by their loved one, to beg on their knees for attention, but feeling inadequate compared to the rest of the world who treats them with more fairness. They feel as though they are not enough for their love interest.
The chorus repeats the line, "All I wanted was you," highlighting the singer's singular focus on this one person in their life. They are consumed by their love for this person and cannot seem to forget or let go of them.
In the second verse, the singer admits to pacing their apartment and falling asleep on the couch, indicating their restlessness and inability to relax because of their unfulfilled desire. They mention waking up to black and white re-runs that "escaped from their mouth," which may signify the singer's tendency to reminisce about the past or replay scenarios in their head.
The final verse expresses a willingness to start over and relive the beginning of the relationship with the hope of being able to slow down and savor the precious moments with their love interest. However, the chorus repeats again, signifying that despite the possibility of a fresh start, the singer still only wants this one person in their life.
Overall, "All I Wanted" captures the intense feelings of infatuation and longing for a love that may not be reciprocated, highlighting the power of unrequited love to take over one's thoughts and emotions.

Think of me when you're out, when you're out there
Remember me even when you're not around me
I'll beg you nice from my knees
I'll humbly ask you for what I want
And when the world treats you way too fairly
When life is too kind to you
Well it's a shame I'm a dream
It's unfortunate that I'm just a figment of your imagination
All I wanted was you
You're all I ever wanted
I think I'll pace my apartment a few times
I'll walk back and forth in my home out of frustration
And fall asleep on the couch
I'll succumb to fatigue on the sofa
Wake up early to black and white re-runs
I'll wake up early to watch old TV shows
That escaped from my mouth
That I can barely recall saying
I could follow you to the beginning
I'd go back with you to the start of our relationship
And just to relive the start
Just to experience it again
And maybe then we'll remember to slow down
And perhaps we'll learn to take things at a gentler pace
At all of our favorite parts
During all the moments that are most special to us

There's so many very hurt people dedicating this to their parents in the comments, and while it makes me sad, it also makes me so angry.
All I want is a child to love, and it simply will not happen for me. The fact that so many parents are so awful to their children it's...infuriating.
From an not mom to her comment section children:
I'm so sorry, love. You deserved better.
Hurt people can love harder than those with no scars on their hearts, and this pain presents you with a gift.
You are capable of a great kindness that you might even surprise yourself with.
You can do great things, and accomplish anything if you work really hard and never stop believing you can.
I'm proud of the art you bring into the world, be it music, drawing, or even being a good friend, or a kind stranger.
I'm proud of you. I'm proud of how far you've come.
Be kind, but also to yourself.
