Although Bruel aspired to be a football star as a youth, he decided to pursue singing after seeing Michel Sardou in 1975. His first success came as an actor, however, in 1979's Le Coup de sirocco. He continued acting in films, on television and in the theater while pursuing his singing career. His first single, "Vide" ("Empty"), released in 1982, was not a success, but the follow up, "Marre de cette nana-là" ("Fed up with that chick"), was a hit.
In 2003, he had his last name officially changed to Bruel-Benguigui, his stage name with his birthname, before his partner Amanda Maruani gave birth to his first child, Oscar, on August 19. On September 21, 2004, he wed the 24-year-old Maruani; it is his first marriage. His second child, Léon Bruel was born on the 28th September, 2005.
As of 2004 Bruel has acted in more than 40 different television and film productions and made five studio albums and several live albums. His last album to date is Entre Deux (2002), a double CD of classic chanson that features duets with Charles Aznavour, Jean-Louis Aubert, Jean-Jacques Goldman, Alain Souchon and Renaud, among others. It sold two million copies and made Bruel France's best paid singer of the year. At the beginning of 2005, in response to the South Asian tsunami of December 26, 2004, Bruel wrote the song "Et puis la terre" to benefit the Red Cross.

Paraît qu'on a changé d'histoire ?
Dis rien j'veux pas savoir
Appuie ta main sur mon bras
Dansons comme une autre fois
Un rendez-vous galant
Pour quelques pas, quelques temps.
Dis-moi pour qui tu rêves
Ce sourire sur tes lèvres
Dans cette drôle de ronde
Tu tournes et la nuit tombe
Et même si tout à changer
Ce p'tit air n'peut pas t'oublier
The song "A Contretemps" by Patrick Bruel is a wistful reflection on lost love and the passage of time. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of a lost era, "before the world became crazy," when the singer and his partner used to go to a cheap dance hall in Nogent. The nostalgia is palpable in lines like "Paraît qu'le ciel est moins bleu/Quand on chante plus à deux" ("It seems the sky is less blue/When we don't sing together"), emphasizing how time has eroded the bright colors of youth and left a sense of emptiness.
The singer wonders whether they have "changed stories," whether they have become different people. He is haunted by the past and by what might have been, singing "Paraît qu'j'ai rêvé de nous/Un peu à contretemps" ("It seems I dreamed of us/A little out of sync"), which speaks to the idea that love is often a matter of timing. Despite this, there is still a sense of hope, a desire to recapture what was lost.

These javas, these romances
In front of a world
That these songs tell about
And even if everything has changed
This little tune hasn't forgotten anything.

A bit out of sync
I have a blurry love in my heart

It seems that we've changed our story?
Say nothing, I don't want to know
Press your hand on my arm
Let's dance like we used to
A romantic date
For a few steps, a few moments.
Dis-moi pour qui tu rêves
Ce sourire sur tes lèvres
Dans cette drôle de ronde
Tu tournes et la nuit tombe
Et même si tout à changé
Ce p'tit air n'peut pas t'oublier
Tell me for whom you dream
That smile on your lips
In this strange dance
You turn and the night falls
And even if everything has changed
This little tune can't forget you.
