Mehlspeis
Peter Alexander Lyrics

Auch Kaviar ist sicher was Spezielles, doch bleibt davon der Magen immer leer;
The song "Mehlspeis" by Peter Alexander is a tribute to Viennese cuisine, specifically the sweet dishes made from flour, or "Mehlspeis" in German. The lyrics express the singer's love for this type of food and its ability to bring joy and comfort to life. The opening lines acknowledge that love and springtime have been the subject of countless songs, but the singer believes that there's something special about the simple pleasure of a good "Mehlspeis." Despite the lack of sophistication in such a choice, the singer finds beauty in the simplicity and emphasizes the role that this indulgence plays in his happiness. The chorus of the song celebrates dishes like Kaiserschmarrn, palatschinken, and Zwetschkenknödel, insisting that they are the best in the world, and that they are unique to Vienna.
The second verse contrasts Viennese dishes with more exotic foods, recognizing that while caviar and souffles might be impressive, they don't hold a candle to the satisfying and grounding qualities of a meal made from flour. The verse praises dishes like Serviettenknödel, which is so filling and delicious that it lingers in the stomach for days. Overall, the song celebrates the simple pleasures of life and how food can bring comfort and joy.
