Fiume nero
Pierangelo Bertoli Lyrics

In testa sempre c'è Lilì Marlene
Quel fiume lurido in cammino
A quel fiume lurido in cammino.
The song "Fiume nero" by Pierangelo Bertoli portrays the bleak and desolate aftermath of war. The verses describe the soldiers descending from the mountains, worn out and wounded, like a filthy black river of boots and curses. The blue and sweet sky seems far away, but for a moment, they say goodbye to Lilì Marlene, the song that always accompanies them in their marches. She is now a statue of sorrow, with dark eyes and a dismal song.
In the second part of the song, the soldiers climb on the snowy mountains, still exhausted and injured, like a black sack of wounds and bayonets. The sky is now dirty grey and threatens to fall. Lilì Marlene remains on the ground, covered by snow and blood, representing the sacrifice and pain of war. She will take away its burden and lead the way towards the murky river. Despite the desolation and loss, the soldiers keep marching, carrying on their shoulders the weight of memory and death.
The song reflects the horrors of war, the sense of loss and disorientation, but also the resilience and commitment of those who fought and those who remember. It portrays the emotions and contradictions of war, its capacity to turn beauty into ugliness and to reveal the depths of the human soul.

In silenzio scesero dal monte gli eroi
The heroes silently descended from the mountains

The sky was blue and sweet above, and seemed so far away
Sembrava molto più blu
It seemed much bluer
Ma un attimo per dire addio
But a moment to say goodbye
I soldati non trovano
The soldiers do not find
In testa sempre c'è Lilì Marlene
Always in their minds is Lili Marlene
I soldati non marciano senza lei
The soldiers do not march without her
Nuvole di fango i suoi occhi scuri
Dark clouds of mud in her eyes
Intona un canto triste come lei
She sings a sad song like herself
A statue of tears, she will not shed a tear
Ma sentirà scorrere vicino
But she will feel it flow nearby
Quel fiume lurido in cammino

The heroes, too tired, climb the snowy peaks
They are a dirty black bag of wounds and bayonets

And up there on the mountain
Ora è grigio sporco il cielo su, sembra proprio minacciare

A stone dawn as hard as she remains alone
Lei che porterà via il suo carico
She who will carry away her burden
