The lyrics of Pierangelo Bertoli's "L'odore del porto" describe a night filled with darkness and fog, and the singer's longing for a woman whom he feels far from. The imagery used is powerful in conveying the emotions the singer is experiencing - the fog-filled sky becomes a box over him, and he longs for a remote control to add some color to the bleakness around him. The singer is plagued with nightmares and memories of the woman he desires, and hopes that by telling his eyes, the moon, and the mirrors he carries with him of his longing, he can somehow bridge the gap between himself and his love.
The second half of the song sees the singer speaking to a sailor, urging him to make haste in his journey as there is a woman waiting for the singer's answer. He feels ready to brave the sea and its unknowns, but remains focused on the waiting woman whose voice he can hear calling out to him. In the midst of the vast ocean, his only hope is to find some sign of familiarity, something that he can use as a guide to find his way to the woman he loves. The song ends with the singer feeling more hopeful than before, having been assured by the woman of her feelings towards him.
Overall, "L'odore del porto" is a powerful song that speaks to the theme of longing for a love that feels far away, and the importance of finding something to hold onto in moments of darkness.
