He spent a long part of his childhood in the café which his parents owned, where he learned work jargon and slang. At the age of 14 he signed up to the conservatoire de musique de Toulouse and to a dramatic arts institute. In the mean time, he set up his first band of 4 musicians in his own name, with whom he played at events throughout the region. In 1957, he was snapped up by Eddie Barclay who signed him on. It was in the studio of Barclay where he met his future wife, Simone Mazaltarim.
In 1958 Perret carried on touring round Parisian cabaret bars and crossed France and Africa as a part of the American group, The Platters. In Novemeber that year, a pleurisy forced him to take two years off in a sanatorium.
A master of the subtleties of the French language and French slang (he even rewrote some of Jean de La Fontaine's fables), his songs are often cheeky (for example Le zizi (The willy)) , asking questions in a seemingly naive child's tone, but has written more serious political songs, such as La bête est revenue, La petite kurde, Vert de Colère ou Lily.
Napo Napiteau

Qui s'appelle Napo
Napi Napo Napiteau
Il est marron de peau
Sur deux pattes il se tient debout
Pour montrer qu'il est content
Et il les pose pleines de boue
Sous mon rosier préféré
Il enterre son os préféré
A son facteur préféré
Il envoie ses puces préférées
J'ai un chien tout beau
Qui s'appelle Napo
Napi Napo Napiteau
A table y me file sans crier gare
Napi Napo Napiteau
Il est marron de peau
J'ai un chien tout beau
Qui s'appelle Napo
Napi Napo Napiteau
Et c'est lui le plus beau
The lyrics of Pierre Perret's song Napo Napiteau are about the singer's beloved dog Napo. The song begins by introducing Napo as a beautiful brown dog who is always by the singer's side. Napo is so loyal and loving that he even stands on his hind legs to show his contentment when the singer is around. However, the singer also describes the mischievous and playful side of Napo, who covers the singer's white suit with mud and buries his favourite bone under the singer's favourite rose bush.
The lyrics also detail Napo's relationships with other animals. Napo is kind and gentle with cats, but he is jealous of his rival, a Saint Bernard dog. Napo's girlfriend, a female dog named Thalie, has eight puppies that look just like Napo, but he doesn't want to recognize them. The song ends with Napiteau, the dog, warning the singer not to reveal all of his secrets and tricks, as he would rather be a drunken dog than a police dog.
