He spent a long part of his childhood in the café which his parents owned, where he learned work jargon and slang. At the age of 14 he signed up to the conservatoire de musique de Toulouse and to a dramatic arts institute. In the mean time, he set up his first band of 4 musicians in his own name, with whom he played at events throughout the region. In 1957, he was snapped up by Eddie Barclay who signed him on. It was in the studio of Barclay where he met his future wife, Simone Mazaltarim.
In 1958 Perret carried on touring round Parisian cabaret bars and crossed France and Africa as a part of the American group, The Platters. In Novemeber that year, a pleurisy forced him to take two years off in a sanatorium.
A master of the subtleties of the French language and French slang (he even rewrote some of Jean de La Fontaine's fables), his songs are often cheeky (for example Le zizi (The willy)) , asking questions in a seemingly naive child's tone, but has written more serious political songs, such as La bête est revenue, La petite kurde, Vert de Colère ou Lily.

Pierre Perret
Vit arriver l'ambulance
Et deux infirmiers du S.M.U.R.
Qui prenant sans état d'âme
Le problème à bras-le-corps
Dir' sans rire à ma pauv' femme
Normal'ment y d'vrait êt' mort
Et pendant que l'ambulance
A tombeau ouvert s'élance
Ma compagne fort abattue
Répétait il est foutu
De l'Essonne en Seine-et-Marne
Dans de beaux hôpitaux neufs
Les réas sont toutes en panne
Ou bien pleines comme un œuf
Nos deux braves urgentistes
Dirent fuyons ces lieux sont pourris
Heureus'ment qu'on a d'aut'pistes
On va foncer à Paris
On va foncer à Bichat
Durant cinq heures de délire
Où tous les hostos nous virent
Ma compagne fort abattue
Répétait il est foutu
A St Antoine y a une place
Mais le réa qui s'méfie
Dit faudrait bien qu'on lui fasse
Une narographie
D'astreinte à Lariboisière
Le en train d'pioncer
N'apprécie guère cett' prière
Et refuse de s'déplacer
L'est six heures à la pendule
Mon cœur est sur les rotules
Ma compagne fort abattue
Répétait il est foutu
Dans l' couloir d' Lariboisière
Mon dernier souffle venu
Quand j'ai fermé les paupières
Les docteurs ont apparu
La réa est disponible
Dit le chef de ces lascars
Mais ces patients sont pénibles
Ils arrivent toujours trop tard
A six heures et quelques broques
Quand j'ai plié mon pébroque
Ma compagne fort abattue
Sanglotait il est foutu
Ma compagne fort abattue
Sanglotait il est foutu
The song 'Ronde Macabre' by Pierre Perret is a satirical commentary on the state of the French healthcare system. The lyrics describe the singer (presumably Perret himself) suffering a stroke and the struggles of his partner and the emergency medical services to find adequate care. The scene is set in a hospital system that is shown to be inefficient, unresponsive and poorly equipped to deal with emergencies.
The first verse describes how the singer's partner calls for emergency services when he suffers a stroke. However, the ambulance crew is not able to provide much help and simply advises that he should be taken to the hospital. The subsequent verses portray the difficulty in finding a hospital that could provide necessary treatment. The medical professionals are portrayed as indifferent and uncaring, with Perret's partner being told that he was 'supposed to be dead' and that there was nothing much that could be done.
The final verse takes a somewhat lighter tone as it describes the singer's death and the doctors finally arriving to provide aid. However, the focus remains on the inadequacies of the healthcare system, with the doctors being described as 'difficult patients' and Perret's partner weeping over his perceived mistreatment.
Overall, the song is a scathing commentary on the state of healthcare in France, with Perret using humour and satire to drive his point home.

Hortense quickly called the firefighters
Qui rappliquant ventre à terre
The firefighters rushed in
Dirent au bout d' l'auscultation
After checking me over, they said
Y'a qu' l'hôpital qui peut faire
Only the hospital can help

Juste avant de s' mettre en route
Just before leaving

My partner, very distraught
Disait l' pauvre il est foutu
Kept saying sadly, he's done for

Poor Hortense was terrified
Ainsi mise au pied du mur
Faced with no other options

Took charge of the problem

Mon cœur est sur les rotules
My heart is on its last legs
Dans l' couloir d' Lariboisière

Mon dernier souffle venu
As my last breath came
Quand j'ai fermé les paupières
As I closed my eyes
Les docteurs ont apparu
The doctors appeared

The ICU is available
Dit le chef de ces lascars
Says the chief of these rascals
Mais ces patients sont pénibles
But these patients are difficult
Ils arrivent toujours trop tard
They always arrive too late
A six heures et quelques broques
At six o'clock and some odd minutes
Quand j'ai plié mon pébroque
When I kicked the bucket
Ma compagne fort abattue
My partner, deeply upset
Sanglotait il est foutu
Sobbing, he's done for
Ma compagne fort abattue
My partner, deeply upset
Sanglotait il est foutu
Sobbing, he's done for
