Satomi (also called 'Satton') is a japanese r&b artist in Japan. Born on M… Read Full Bio ↴Satomi (also called 'Satton') is a japanese r&b artist in Japan. Born on March 7, 1989 in Yamaguchi, Japan. She started her dancing lessons at the age of 3. In 2003, at the age of 14, she started singing when her dancing teacher asked her to join a vocal training program. As soon as autumn of the same year she was signed to management, and in February 2005, "Love Shouts" was pre-released exclusively in the Kyushu area where Satomi was based.

In January 2005, at the precious age of 15, she was chosen to perform live at MIDEM, after beating many established names in Japan. This live performance was documented in a national newspaper and has been the center of attention of the Japanese media ever since.

As the first artist to be released on the Hiptones label, and under the guidance of the people behind UK’s legendary Creation label, Satomi was able to work with UK’s leading producers. This led to her showcase at the world famous venue Ronnie Scotts, in front of more than 100 people from the UK media in May 2005, making her, at the age of 16, the youngest and possibly first ever Japanese artist to be solo showcased in the UK. Her performance was well received, and in June 2005, "Toxic Love" was pre-released in a vinyl only format.

In 2006, Satomi debuted in Japan as SATOMI', releasing her first double a-side MAXI single 'Yesterday/Love to stay' in February. Satomi continued to release and record tracks in both the United Kingdom and Japan in early 2006. It was not until the release of her third double a-side MAXI single, "Orange canvas ~Aki no Sora no Shita de~ / Fairy's stick", that Satomi made the Oricon top 100 charts, debuting at #81.

Satomi released her first Japanese full album, "Diamondlily", in February 2007, jumping to the #15 spot on its initial release day.

I can usually say something sarcastic about any case but between the grandma's physical scars and hers and the sisters emotional scars about being so close while someone so loved was killed. Then the father spending years passing out flyers and the whole family using the college fund as a reward instead of how it was supposed to be used- for a lovely intelligent girls future. This piece of shit destroyed a family who did everything right and where everyone should have been safe

It truly makes me think about what Satomi's father wrote: during his life, he worked so hard to pave her way towards a briliant future, but at the same time, he was mostly away. If the murderer saw him around that day, he would have certainly reconsidered his evil plot. I know, it was impossible to predict this twist of fate, but still... It's horrible, to realize he was so busy being a good salaryman and provider, he fell short at being a family man. That he didn't take as much time off as he should have to hug her, to live happy moments with her, to make more memories... Just imagining that make me really sad for him.

The bravery that grandmother showed is a true testament to how much she loved her granddaughters. I am glad he was caught but terribly saddened by the fact that, for Satomi, the simple act of taking a nap wasn't safe. He deserves to be in jail.

Her grandma was a brave soul, she went to the killer and could of been killed. She probably stayed to also give the other girl a chance to get away because he could of killed them both.

I don’t believe that he killed her impulsively. The fact that he kept the knife leads me to think it was a trophy kill and he had intended to take a life that day. Cruelty to animals is one of the signs of homicidal sociopathy and the cat incident is pretty revealing. I hope they did a thorough search of his life details the 14 years he was out. No telling what mischief he did.

Yes. His responses were like "Here is the appropriate response an empathetic person would give." followed by "Here is how I actually feel." He sounds like he was playing the part of a human being, but didn't feel like one at all. That could be why his story of running when he screwed up happened. He screwed up the act and had an extreme response to what is merely a simple mistake to most. Him celebrating hitting the cat also seemed almost contrived. Like a teen being edgy to stand out. Deep down, I think he felt like nothing, and hoped to make others feel the despair of being nothing like him. Satomi was just a tool to achieve that to him. It is why him talking about remorse is so fake, because he can't imagine feeling bad about breaking a toy.

Meh, that´s to simple and often a "cliche" ! Of course such people exist, but i know persons (through my workplace, a forensic-department) who adore animals and would never harm them, but on the other side, they detest humans so much that they would violate/kill them (if they had a chance to) from one second to another.... there is a huge differnce between a sociopath and a psychopath because the first one is hard to detect (what makes the more dangerous) and the second ones are only characterized by the lack of impulse control (making it easy to spot them, rather sooner than later)

Hmmm. Trophy kills and homicidal ideations aren’t mutually exclusive with an impulsive kill. Often a serial killer’s first murder is done opportunistically because they’re presented with a vulnerable person or a “perfect” set of circumstances. They didn’t plan out the kill with that particular victim on that particular day, but they take advantage of it because they already want to kill. If you weren’t ideating already, you wouldn’t kill, even impulsively…. Do you understand that?

I really dislike the phrase "wrong place at the wrong time." No, Satomi was at the right place (her home, in her bedroom) at the wrong time. I'm surprised he didn't get the death sentence, but I'm glad he was caught, and now her family can start to heal from this tragic event. Thank you for bringing light to this case and for acknowledging the troubles that women face on a day to day basis. It’s so sad that satomi had to be on the horrible side of statistics. But, although sad, it was nice to see a solved case and that the family was able to get some sort of closure.

It's so satisfying to know that his obvious inability to control his rage was ultimately his undoing. All he had to do was not kick that employee in that moment and he'd probably still be a free man to this day and completely avoid justice. And he was supposedly settling the argument with the other employee on his own, I can imagine he was probably offering an extra 1M yen salary and extra vacation days just to keep him from going to the cops, because he of course knew that as soon as they get involved and ask for DNA, he would be done for. Poetic justice in the finest! Thank God for that bystander who unknowingly brought justice to a case with an absolutely unforgiveable crime.

It was a random chance that Manabu saw Satomi, followed her to her home, stalked and murdered her. Equally random was the dispute between two workers who end up with an assault and an arrest soon afterwards. What matters was that Karma eventually caught up to Manabu and he was convicted of Satomi's murder and then sentenced for life even though he was emotionally prepared for execution. For Satomi's family, especially the Younger sister and grandmother, what they witnessed the day of her death will always stay with them. At least, they were able to obtain a sense of closure with Manabu's apprehension, trial and sentence

His words during questioning sound like a child who knows they broke a rule but don't want to get in trouble. He definitely sounds ill; deciding to abandon your whole life because you were late to work once is an overreaction to say the least. Not that his mental state could justify what he did in any way. Also, Grandma is a real boss for coming right at him like that to try to protect her granddaughter and Little Sister is so brave for getting help and relaying all those details to the police. Also, I wouldn't say the cases were totally unrelated. The common factor in both of these was his evidently uncontrollable rage and narcissism, and as messed up as it sounds, I'm glad he lost his temper kicked that employee because otherwise it's very possible he'd never get caught.

Hi KR, thank you for another compelling video. First, I'll state the obvious: the grandmother is an absolute legend. It must have been so truamatic that she forgot, but in the moment, she was strong. Credit to the little sister for remembering the perpetrator's face, which is remarkable given the stress; the sketch was accurate, which isn't always the case. Also, we have to give props to the officer responding to the workplace incident for being alert. If you are wanted for murder, perhaps you shouldn't kick your co-worker. Finally, yes the perp is an inconsistent liar. I suspect he kept the knife as a trophy, a way to relive the moment. Fortunately, he won't be doing that outside a jail cell.

I'm glad this was solved. Statistically, one year after a murder is committed, there is only a 5% chance of an arrest being made. Only 20% of those arrests result in a conviction. So, it's fortunate to have a resolution.

Yeah, the grandmother was amazing to withstand such an attack and then make her way to a phone. Even at 72 years old she was incredible and did her best to protect her family. The sister has also been applauded for how accurate the sketch is to the perpetrator. Usually these sketches are not helpful at all unless they contain a very distinctive feature, but this is one of the few times when it actually looks like the person responsible.
It is such a heartbreaking but interesting case. A simple kick on the other side of the country put an end to this. I doubt he would have ever been caught if he didn't do it, and it makes you wonder how many other people out there are just living normal lives after doing something so terrible.

I understand that there is a difference between my culture and Japanese culture, but I find it so strange that Manabu felt he had to quit his job of 3 years and never return just because he was late to work one time. Then, to decide just to take off to Tokyo to go to the "gaming district" which seems like a 180 degree flip of personality from his feeling of being so responsible that he must leave his job for being late. It feels more like this guy just mentally snapped and had a psychotic episode even if it was for a brief time.

Hey, great video! Interesting case, and well-told story. You do a great job establishing the "characters" involved, which makes the case feel very human. (Also, I meant to say this on another of your vids, but your line delivery has definitely gotten better since your early uploads. It's still not quite there, but it's much easier to listen to. I'm kind of torn on how to feel about this case's outcome-- specifically, the killer's sentencing. Satomi's death is obviously a tragedy. I feel for the Kitaguchis; just knowing that the man who killed Satomi still breathes while their sister/daughter never will again, it must be more salt in their old wounds. At least knowing who killed her gives them that much closure. But generally, I'm not in favor of the death penalty, even if the family and the perp both ask for it. Any killer who genuinely seems to recognize the devastating consequences of his actions has to have some small amount of good in him. At least, I'd like to think so. Guess this one is a tragedy on all sides.

Making his sentence go from death to life may sound like it's more lenient but it can be that they wanted him to experience as much hell on earth as possible before he passes. I mean, considering that he'll live into his late 70s or early 80s at worst, he's got to experience a lot of shit before the sweet release of death is granted. There's the guilt (of he actually felt any) as well as the harsh treatment and conditions of prison and know that while he may write letters and see photos, he's never going to know freedom again.

By whatever it is would not be anywhere close to the amount of fear and pain that Satomi went threw. Plus she should have felt safe taking a nap in her own bedroom. They hang them in Japan, and there is at least one article of inmates suing Japan for their "cruel, painful, and frightening" execution methods. So assuming that they aren't super efficient at hanging them and snapping their necks for instant death then it would be extremely painful and frightening.

I certainly wouldn't call a life sentence lenient. There are worse things than death. If I knew I was going to spend the rest of my natural life in a cement box, surrounded by some of the most vile, and repugnant people society has to offer, with no hope of getting out, I would say death is a preferable alternative. The only monsters can be are humans and really only cruelty come from humanity. He most likely kept knife for trophy. He deserves death penalty for killing innocent life she didn't deserve this.

She sounds like heart of gold which is rare. This is sad hearing such good soul get killed before she could really live.

When you got to the part about the cat it made me think that anytime a person shows happiness over an animal being in pain, they should have to get screened for mental illness. Once my parent's had friends over and they brought their little grandson, who was maybe 4 years old. He deliberately stepped on our dogs paw and laughed with the dog yelped. I took our dog away and told the grandparents to never bring that kid over ever again. They tried to downplay it, but my parents sided with me. He should be seen by professionals, I don't think that's an overreaction.

To me a life sentence feels more punishing than a death sentence. Living in those conditions for that long sounds harsher than just dying and escaping the reality of what he did.

I wouldn't say he had anger issues, it's more like he was always having a fight between fitting in and being marginal. He wanted things to go wrong in his life where all he could do was to fit in, he wanted something extreme to happen. I'd say that's why he loved extreme films and that incident with the cat, because those felt so out of the ordinary that they fulfilled his escapist fantasies.

Japan's population is so large that there would be at least thousands of people that would match his description. The real problem is that there was nothing to pin the guy to the area because he wasn't from there. No one expects some random stranger from a completely different area randomly stalking and killing someone there.

Not to make light of a terrible crime like this but imagine your boss from hell kicks you in public and you just have to cope because you need your job but a stranger calls the police and they come and talk to you and by the end of the day your boss in prison for a decade old child murder that’s unbelievably wild

Manabu definetly had untreaded issues and was super pentup and stressed out from work. He said "f*uck it" and ranaway, he probably felt truly alive for the fist time in his life, he felt he could do anything at the moment, including r*aping a HS girl, very disturbing.

The fact that the family AND the killer both wanted the death penalty and the authorities STILL didn't grant it is beyond me. Like, the killer was like "hey I understand that what I've done should grant me the death penalty and since the family wants it I'll take it" and the jury was still like "lmao nope"

Chill. There's no way you get the death penalty for a single murder if you admit guilt. At least in the US who I'm pretty sure gives harsher sentences than Japan.
