Twisted Every Way
Sarah Brightman Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
what answer can I give?
Am I to risk my life,
to win the chance to live?
Can I betray the man,
who once inspired my voice?
Do I become his prey?
Do I have any choice?
He kills withput a thought
he murders all that's good ...
I know I can't refuse,
and yet, I wish I could ...
Oh God - if I agree,
what horrors wait for me
in this, the Phantom's opera ...?
The song "Twisted Every Way" from Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera, as performed by Sarah Brightman, is a poignant expression of the inner turmoil and moral dilemma that the character of Christine Daaé faces. The lyrics are rich in imagery and metaphor, and they convey the complex emotions that Christine experiences as she grapples with the conflicting demands of her heart, her loyalty, and her survival.
The opening lines "Twisted every way, what answer can I give?" suggest that Christine is at a crossroads, uncertain of what to do next. She is torn between two choices, both of which have great consequences. On the one hand, she could risk her life and stand up to the Phantom, the man who once inspired her voice and who she feels a connection with. However, on the other hand, she could betray him and become his prey, living in fear and under his control. The question that Christine is asking herself is whether she has any choice in the matter, or whether fate has already decided for her.
The second stanza is even more harrowing, as Christine reflects on the Phantom's ruthlessness and brutality. She knows that she cannot refuse his demands, but at the same time, she wishes that she could. The line "He kills without a thought, he murders all that's good" is a chilling reminder of the Phantom's power, and of the danger that Christine is in. The final lines of the song, as Christine pleads with God for guidance and protection, capture the sense of dread and uncertainty that pervades the story.
