Chad Petree and Jeremy Dawson grew up in Oklahoma and were involved in previous music projects together, including the soundtrack for the videogame Grand Theft Auto III in 2000 and Cloud2Ground. After relocating to Los Angeles, California in 2004, the two recruited vocalist Carah Faye Charnow and drummer Mikey Martin.
Their debut album, We Are Pilots was originally released in January 2005, though versions of the album featuring different cover art and tracklisting would be released later the following year. Three singles were issued: "Le Disko", "You Are the One" and "Rainy Monday". We Are Pilots received a Grammy Award nomination on 6 December 2007 in the category of Best Electronic/Dance Album, but lost to The Chemical Brothers.
The band's second studio album, Season of Poison, was released on 4th November 2008, with Sisely Treasure as vocalist. They have released two singles from their second album: "Ghost Town" and "Ricochet!".
In 2009, Shiny Toy Guns released "Major Tom", a Peter Schilling cover.
In 2011, Carah Faye Charnow returned to Shiny Toy Guns. In addition, Daniel Johansson also joined the band on guitar, synth and bass. In March 2011, the band released a new single "The Sun", available to download for free.
In May 2012 the band announced that Daniel Johansson left the band.

All systems are go
Are you sure?
Control is not convinced
But the computer has the evidence
No need to abort
The countdown starts
Nothing left to chance, all is working
Trying to relax, up in the capsule
"Send me up a drink", jokes Major Tom
The count goes on
Four, three, two, one
Earth below us
Drifting, falling, floating weightless
Calling, calling home
Second stage is cut
We're now in orbit
Stabilizers up, running perfect
Starting to collect requested data
"What will it affect, when all is done?"
Thinks Major Tom
Back at ground control
There is a problem
"Go to rockets full"
Not responding
"Hello Major Tom, are you receiving?
Turn the thrusters on
We're standing by"
There's no reply
Four, three, two, one
Earth below us
Drifting, falling, floating weightless
Calling, calling home
Across the stratosphere, a final message
"Give my wife my love"
Then nothing more
Far beneath the ship, the world is mourning
They don't realize, he's alive
No one understands, but Major Tom sees
Now the light commands
This is my home, I'm coming home"
Earth below us
Drifting, falling
Floating weightless
Calling home
Earth below us
Drifting, falling
Floating weightless
Calling home
Earth below us
Drifting, falling
Floating weightless
Calling, calling home
Home

The song "Major Tom" by Shiny Toy Guns is a cover of David Bowie's "Space Oddity" and retells the story of an astronaut named Major Tom who goes on a space mission but becomes lost in space. The song starts with Major Tom's ship waiting for lift-off, but with some doubt from ground control about the mission's success. Despite the concerns, the countdown begins and Major Tom is launched into space. The chorus describes Major Tom floating weightlessly in space, calling out for home.
The second verse talks about Major Tom entering orbit and starting to collect data. He ponders what effect his mission will have once it is complete. At ground control, a problem arises and they try to contact Major Tom to fix it, but there is no response. The chorus repeats, describing how Major Tom is still drifting in space, calling out to home.
In the final verse, Major Tom sends a final message to his wife back on Earth, then the song ends with the Earth peacefully floating below Major Tom. The song can be interpreted as commentary on isolation, loss, and the human desire to be connected to others.
