Listeners familiar with the Dutch music tradition will instantly recognise her style: Sophie gives a modern take on the so-called 'levenslied' or 'smartlap' of typical Amsterdam 'volkszangers' like André Hazes. There is also Dutch eighties and indie pop in the mix. Many Sophie Straat songs are in fact protest songs (of sorts) against gentrification, mansplaining, et cetera.
Her début EP, ’t Is niet mijn schuld, was released in 2020. Following a string of singles, her début full-length, Smartlap is niet dood, is set for a March 2023 release.

Waar kom jij vandaan
Dan zeg ik met gepaste trots
De Pijp daar ben ik ontstaan
Je hoeft niet meer naar Amsterdam
Het staat toch al op Instagram
Er is veel te veel veranderd
Tot mijn spijt
Er is veel te veel veranderd
Tot mijn spijt
In "De Pijp," Sophie Straat shares her personal experience with gentrification in Amsterdam. She grew up in the neighborhood and is now shocked by the drastic changes she sees upon her return. The friendly interactions she once had when buying her fries have been replaced with a crowded and impersonal atmosphere where she is told to move aside because of the influx of tourists and yuppies. She talks about how the smell of the fish market takes her back to a time when the area was more affordable and the market was the center of the community. Now, everything has been commodified and shared on social media platforms like Instagram.
Sophie Straat's lyrics not only express her feelings about the changes in her neighborhood, but they also highlight the larger issue of gentrification in cities. As neighborhoods become more expensive, long-time residents are pushed out and replaced by newer, wealthier residents. The sense of community and culture is lost, and the area starts to feel generic and like every other trendy spot.

Too much has changed
Tot mijn spijt
To my regret
