The band's long career has seen them successfully adopt many different musical genres; including glam pop, power pop, electronic dance music and mainstream pop. Despite these many styles, a recognizable "Sparks sound" remains throughout, and they have enjoyed a large cult following since their first releases. Sparks have been highly influential on the development of popular music, in particular on the late 1970s scene, when in collaboration with Giorgio Moroder (and Telex subsequently), they reinvented themselves as an electronic pop duo, and abandoned the traditional rock band line up. In contrast to the esteem in which they are held by such peers as Depeche Mode, New Order, Morrissey and They Might Be Giants, who all cite Sparks as a major influence, their almost constantly changing styles and unique visual presentations have sometimes seen them dismissed as a novelty act.
The 2002 release of Lil' Beethoven, their self-described "genre-defining opus", and 2006's Hello Young Lovers (their 20th studio album) have brought Sparks renewed critical and commercial success, and seen them continue to "steer clear of pop conventions."
The 2021 documentary film 'The Sparks Brothers', directed by Edgar Wright, has renewed interest in the band for a new audience.
Sextown U.S.A.
Sparks Lyrics

Because I'm gonna recommend a little somethin' for you
(Oh yeah)
Grab your little Lulu or your Sally or Sue
And take her out to that Metropolis without no taboos
(Oh yeah)
Who are you
Never mind
Just sing the tune
[Chorus]
Sextown U.S.A., we can go anywhere and it becomes
Sextown U.S.A., we can go here or there, it all becomes
The perfect place, and what a pace
Man, I've heard of Peyton Place and Pigalle too
But this is better than the others, it's American too
(Oh yeah)
No one has the time to eat a meal or to think
Because they're way too busy doin' Kama Sutra-why things
(Oh yeah)
Look around
See the sights
Go to bed
What a life
[Chorus]
There's a whole lot of fish in the sea
[Chorus]
If you try to come here and you try to abstain
They'll send you to the prison for the criminally insane
(Oh yeah)
Maybe I'll just stay here for the rest of my life
Because it's better than commuting here with you every night
(Oh yeah)
[Chorus]
The song Sextown U.S.A. by Sparks is a thrilling, upbeat composition that invites people to toss away traditional attitudes and embrace a more hedonistic lifestyle. The lyrics suggest that the fictional town of Sextown is a place where taboos are stripped away, and people can let go of their inhibitions. The singer encourages the listener to grab their significant other and take them to Sextown to enjoy the wild pace of life.
The use of sexually suggestive language is evident throughout the song, indicating that the tone is one of erotic liberation. The lyrics narrate that no one has time to eat or think because they're too busy doing "Kama Sutra-why" things. This phrase suggests that people in Sextown engage in sexual acts that are beyond or contrary to what is conventionally understood.
In conclusion, Sparks's Sextown U.S.A. is a song that extols the virtues of hedonism and liberation from traditional norms. It encourages people to embrace a freer, more open sexuality in the fictional town of Sextown, where everything becomes the perfect place, and what a pace.
