Stylisticly, The Feeling have a debt of gratitude to the 70s, particularly bands such as 10cc, Supertramp, Pilot, Buggles, Queen, Stackridge, and other "progressive pop" acts. They are not averse to wearing their heart on their sleeve at gigs, playing covers of tunes by their favourite artists (such as 'Video Killed The Radio Star' by Buggles).
The Feeling have also followed the 'progressive' tradition of the concept album, with Twelve Stops and Home being a concept album about lost and unrequited love. The album starts with a relationship having just broken up, then follows through with the various emotions of the protagonist from hopeless dreamer to turning to drink for comfort, and finally slumping home.
We Can Dance
The Feeling Lyrics

But I aint gonna sit and hold hands
If you want, we can dance
But I don't know a thing of romance
If you want, we can sing
Baby, fear is a terrible thing
If you want, we can sing
And I said,
"Oh, my baby. I am what you made me."
So while all the kids down in hell all party
All the saints up in heaven drink tea
While a dream is anothers romance
All the fools on the planet
(All the fools on the planet)
All the fools on the planet
Like me on the planet
Just dance
If you want, we can laugh
How I wish I could open my heart
So I sing, take a chance
Take my first step to freedom and dance
And I said,
"Oh, my baby. I am what you made me."
So while all the kids down in hell all party
All the saints up in heaven drink tea
And the hopefuls and poets likely
Are singing "How did this happen to me?"
While a dream is anothers romance
All the fools on the planet
(All the fools on the planet)
All the fools on the planet
Like me on the planet
Just dance
The Feeling's song "We Can Dance" is a song about living in the moment and taking a chance on life. The lyrics convey a sense of urgency and a desire to let go of fears and inhibitions in order to dance, sing, and laugh with freedom. The chorus "If you want, we can dance, but I ain't gonna sit and hold hands" is a call to action for the listener to join in the fun and not let their fears or insecurities get in the way of experiencing life to the fullest.
The second verse goes deeper into the idea of fears and how they can hold us back. "Baby, fear is a terrible thing" is a powerful statement, reminding us that fear can cripple us and prevent us from taking risks in life. The line "So I sing, take a chance, take my first step to freedom and dance" is a declaration of the singer's own willingness to take a risk and dance, despite not knowing how to romance.
The final verse is a reflection on the chaos of the world and the need to find joy in life, despite the challenges. The lines "While a dream is anothers romance, all the fools on the planet like me on the planet, just dance" are a reminder that we are all imperfect and that life is short, so we might as well dance and enjoy what we can.
Overall, "We Can Dance" is a call to action to embrace life and let go of fears and inhibitions, and instead dance, sing, and laugh with abandon.
