By the Grace of God
The Hellacopters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey Girl,
You'll land it.
You got supplies
and they demand it.
You've got the looks
and the glamour,
cut by the chisel
and beaten by the hammer.

They're naive,
So they'll believe it.
They will act like dogs
when they recieve it.

Through the darkness
and the haze,
a stright and narrow
fall from grace.

They need,
they yearn.
They lust with cheeks unturned.
Hands shake and heads will nod.
They get by by the grace of God.

Hey Boy.
You understand.
Say your prayers,
or you'll be damned.

He's a watcher
and a voyer,
bystander
and destroyer.

They need,
they yearn.
They lust with cheeks unturned.

Hands shake and heads will nod.
They get by by the grace of God.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "By the Grace of God" by The Hellacopters speak to the superficial nature of society and the lengths people will go to gain attention and recognition. The song opens with "Hey Girl, You'll land it. You got supplies and they demand it. You've got the looks and the glamour, cut by the chisel and beaten by the hammer." This suggests that the woman being addressed has all the qualities that society values - beauty, charm, and the ability to meet demands. The second stanza, "They're naive, So they'll believe it. They will act like dogs when they receive it." further reinforces the idea that society is gullible and easily manipulated. People will believe what they are told, even if it is not true, and they will go to great lengths to get what they want.

The chorus, "They need, they yearn. They lust with cheeks unturned. Hands shake and heads will nod. They get by by the grace of God." emphasizes how people will do anything to get what they want, even if it means compromising their own values. The second verse addresses men, saying "Hey Boy. You understand. Say your prayers, or you'll be damned. He's a watcher and a voyeur, bystander and destroyer." This verse suggests that men also feel an intense pressure to fit into societal norms, and they will do whatever it takes to maintain their power and status.

Overall, "By the Grace of God" is a commentary on the superficial nature of society and the lengths people will go to gain recognition and acceptance. The song suggests that people will do whatever it takes to fit in, even if it means compromising their own values and morals.

It’s been almost 20 years since I saw them live! In 1999 they played in San Diego and at the Casbah opening for Supersuckers. The Hellacopters blew us and them away! It was really hard for them to go on after these guys. All In all it was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen ( and will forever be) my whole life.

@LaBayZe

You're so lucky.

I saw that show! Ha, small world. A few years later I saw the Backyard Babies open for Social D that when I made the HC & BB connection.
