The band released their Swedish Grammi-winning debut album "Supershitty to the Max!" in 1996. Just before a tour opening for Kiss, the band recruited keyboardist and percussionist Anders Lindström (also known as Boba Fett or Boba) on a part-time basis; he would become a full-time member in 1999. After the album "Payin' the Dues" in 1998, Dregen left the band to return to Backyard Babies full-time, and Mattias Hellberg and Danne Andersson were recruited to complete the band's touring responsibilities. After the release of "Grande Rock", which featured additional guitar playing from both Lindström and Hellberg, Robert Dahlqvist was hired as a full-time lead guitarist in 1999. With the lineup now solidified, the band released three more studio albums and a cover album, with many EPs and limited-edition releases as well. The Hellacopters disbanded amicably in 2008 so the members could move on to other projects. Eight years later, the band reassembled in 2016, initially for an exclusive performance at Sweden Rock Festival to celebrate the 20-year anniversary of their award-winning debut album "Supershitty to the Max!".
In October 2021, the band announced that they had signed with the record label Nuclear Blast to release a new album in the spring of 2022. The album, "Eyes of Oblivion", was released on April 1, 2022.

Somewhat unreal
And it ain't fiction
It's catching up with you
Nothing you can do, no
And the hurt begins
As you're standing by
The sun's eclipsed by a thousand flies
It's time to fall, you'll see
It ain't no misery
And it will not end
It's a fact and it's cold
Just like you've been told so
The hurt begins
Leeches on your skin
As you're standing by
The sun's eclipsed by a thousand lies
Your stomach turns
Your eyes, they itch and burn
Pray to God, ?Get them off me?
Alone on bloody, bended knees
Despite the fact you scream and shout
No one reacts or cares about
They say it's all just in your head
It's plain to see you're left for dead
In the night you feel
Somewhat unreal
And it ain't fiction
It's catching up with you
Nothing you can do, no
The hurt begins
Leeches on your skin
As you're standing by
The sun's eclipsed by a thousand lies
In “The Exorcist,” The Hellacopters paint a haunting picture of a person plagued by some unknown ailment. The lyrics describe the feeling of something crawling under the skin and a pain that is unexplainable, unrelenting, and seemingly unconquerable. The haunting imagery beginning with a “Sun’s eclipsed by a thousand flies” adds to the eerie theme of the song. The person seems to be pleading for help, but no one hears them, and ultimately they are left “alone on bloody, bended knees.” Despite the fact that the person is screaming and shouting, no one reacts, and they are left to suffer in silence. The song concludes with the same haunting feeling of the person trying to escape the pain but is ultimately unable to do so.
The lyrics to “The Exorcist” evoke a feeling of helplessness, torment, and despair. Each line and stanza seems to build on the previous one, amplifying the sense of the singer's suffering. The sense that there is an unknown force acting on the character leaves the listener feeling a sense of unease, adding to the haunting vibe of the song.
