Lumineers-Ho Hey
The Lumineers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Ho hey, ho hey)

(Ho) I been trying to do it right
(Hey) I been living a lonely life
(Ho) I been sleepin' here instead
(Hey) I been sleepin' in my bed
(Ho) I been sleepin' in my bed (Hey ho)
(Ho) So show me family
(Hey) All the blood that I will bleed
(Ho) I don't know where I belong
(Hey) I don't know where I went wrong
(Ho) But I can write a song (Hey)

I belong with you, you belong with me, you're my sweetheart
I belong with you, you belong with me, you're my sweet' (Ho)

(Hey, ho hey)

(Ho) I don't think you're right for him
(Hey) Think of what it might have been if we
(Ho) Took a bus to Chinatown
(Hey) I'd be standin' on canal (Ho) and Bowery (Hey)
(Ho) She'd be standin' next to me (Hey)

I belong with you, you belong with me, you're my sweetheart
I belong with you, you belong with me, you're my sweetheart

Love we, need it now
Let's hope, for some
'Cause oh, we're bleedin' out

I belong with you, you belong with me, you're my sweetheart
I belong with you, you belong with me, you're my sweet' (Ho hey, ho hey)

Overall Meaning

The song "Ho Hey" by The Lumineers is about finding one's family and loved ones amidst the chaos and confusion of life. The first stanza talks about the struggles of the singer to "do it right," which could refer to him trying to find his place in the world and living a lonely life in the process. He has been "sleeping here instead" of finding a home, and he longs for someone to show him his family - the people who will stick by him through thick and thin.

In the next stanza, the singer talks about how he doesn't know where he belongs or where he went wrong. However, he finds solace in writing songs, which allows him to express his emotions and connect with others. The recurring refrain of "I belong with you, you belong with me, you're my sweetheart" emphasizes the importance of finding love and companionship in life, and the singer repeats this mantra to himself as a way of reinforcing his belief in the power of love.

The third stanza shifts focus towards the singer's romantic relationship, as he acknowledges that he doesn't think the person he is singing to is right for someone else. He imagines what could have been if they had taken a bus to Chinatown and stood together on Canal and Bowery. The final stanza continues with the portrayal of love as a necessary balm that can heal the wounds of life, with the line "Love, we need it now" underscoring the urgency of finding connection in a world that can sometimes feel cold and unforgiving.

@justamookie7o4fan46

my older brother was in jail and he called
one day to ask me to play a song and he
requested this one,we sat in silence while I
put my speaker full blast and listened, after
he said it's a pretty dope song right and I
agreed , In 2019 he committed suicide and as
I sat in my room crying when I got the news I
remembered when he asked me to play this
for him, in my grief this song brought a bit
closer to my brother and after 2 years I still
come back to listen to this , RIP Shane
