Initially playing in colleges, Toquinho's professional career took off in the 1960s at shows promoted by radio personality Walter Silva at the famous Paramount theater in São Paulo. He composed his first recorded song with Chico Buarque entitled "Lua Cheia" (Full Moon). His first big hit was composed in 1970 with Jorge Benjor, "Que Maravilha" (What a Wonder). That same year he was invited by Vinícius de Moraes, co-writer of the worldwide hit song "Garota de Ipanema" (The Girl from Ipanema), to participate in a series of shows in Buenos Aires, forming a solid partnership that would continue for 11 years and produce 120 songs, 25 records and over a thousand shows.
After the death of Vinícius de Moraes in 1980, he went on to pursue a solo career, often performing with other talented musicians like Paulinho da Viola, Danilo Caymmi, Paulinho Nogueira and Chico Buarque. He continues to record and play.

Procurei pois tu
Breve me fizeste ouvir
Tua voz mentirosa deliciosa
E hoje é meu ideal
Um abismo de rosas
Onde a sonhar eu devo
Enfim sofrer e amar
Mas hoje que importa
Se tu'alma é fria?
Meu coração se conforta
Na tua própria ironia
Se há no meu rosto
Um rir de ventura
Que importa o mudo desgosto
De minha dor assim
Sem fim?
Se minha esperança
O que não se alcança
Sonhou buscar
Deve calar
Hoje o meu sofrer
E jamais dele te dizer
O amor que é puro
Suporta obscuro
Quase a sorrir
A dor de ver
A mais linda ilusão morrer
Humilde bem vês que vou
A teus pés levar
Meu coração que jurou
Sempre ser amigo e dedicado
Tenha embora que viver
Neste sonho enganado
Jamais direi
Que assim vivi
Porque te amei
The song "Adeus" by Toquinho & Vinicius is a heartbreaking tale of a love that has come to an end. The lyrics depict the pain and longing felt by the singer after their lover leaves. The opening lines describe how the moon that appeared in the sky is not the same moon that witnessed their love. The night falls on their love, and all that remains is the word "Adeus" meaning goodbye. The singer expresses the conflicting emotions of wanting to stay but having to leave, and how love feels like a slow death. They reflect on the brief moment of pure love, symbolized by a dying star, and the anguish of having to part ways with a shining woman. The heart is torn apart, and all the love and disillusionment bleed out. The pain of love is described as constantly dying while living. The singer sought love in vain, only to be deceived by a beautiful but dishonest voice, which became their ideal and source of suffering. However, despite the coldness of their lover's soul, the singer finds solace in their own irony. They mask their silent despair with a smile of happiness. Their hope, the unattainable dream, must remain unspoken. Ultimately, the song speaks of the purity of love, enduring the dark and smiling through the pain of seeing the most beautiful illusion perish.
