History
Vetusta Morla was born in the summer of 1998. It all started at the José Luis Sampedro Institute, in the Madrid town of Tres Cantos.
The first components of Vetusta Morla were Pucho (Juan Pedro Martín, voice), David García "el Indio" (drums), Jorge González (percussion), Alejandro Notario (bass) and Guillermo Galván (guitar). Later, at the end of 1998, Juan Manuel Latorre joined the group as a guitar and keyboard, Alejandro Notario left the group, finally completing the sextet with Álvaro B. Baglietto.
The group takes its name from the old turtle of the youthful novel The Endless Story, by Michael Ende. Morla is a turtle who chose to believe herself fair enough to become nothing.
The recording of his first model, 13 hours with Lucy, took place in January 2000. After winning in March of the same year the second prize of the Hortaleza Musical Contest, and the first prize of the State Pop-Rock Contest of Rivas-Vaciamadrid A few months later, the opportunity arose to record a second demo, which would take the name of the band, in January 2001.

The song “Año Nuevo” by Vetusta Morla tells the story of a person, possibly the singer, who is unable to recall what happened the previous day. It has been so long since the day in question that the sun has already set and risen again. The person is restless and unable to sleep despite everyone else around them being asleep. They find solace in a stone that they have found and begin to stroke it. Suddenly, they become aware of noise and realise that there is a party happening nearby.
The person is surprised to find that the party is happening in their own living room and that the guests are both living and dead. Everyone is toasting to celebrate another year passing, the joys and sorrows it brought, and the fact that they are still alive. The person is also part of this celebration and joins in the toast. The song ends with the chorus repeated, reflecting on the idea that it is better to celebrate life than to dwell on the pain and difficulties of the past.
The song can be interpreted as a reflection on the fleeting nature of time, and the importance of cherishing the present moment. The stone that the person strokes could represent a sense of grounding or connection to the earth, while the party guests, both living and dead, reflect on the idea that time moves forward inevitably. Together, the lyrics evoke a sense of letting go of the past and embracing the present, enjoying the present moment because it is all there is.
