Girl From Epanema
Vinícius de Moraes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Tall and tan and young and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes, each one she passes goes - ah

When she walks, she's like a samba
That swings so cool and sways so gentle
That when she passes, each one she passes goes - ah
(Ooh) But he watch her so sadly
How can he tell her he loves her
Yes I would give my heart gladly
But each day, that she walks to the sea
She looks straight ahead, not at he

Tall, (and) tan, (and) young, (and) lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes, he smile - but she doesn't see

(Doesn't see)
(She just doesn't see, she never sees him)

Overall Meaning

Vinicius de Moraes's song "Girl From Ipanema" tells the story of a girl who walks along the beach in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro, capturing the attention of every person around her. The lyrics depict the girl as "tall and tan and young and lovely" and with the ability to walk like a samba, that "swings so cool and sways so gentle" that people can't help but watch her pass by. Although the girl has the ability to catch everyone's attention, there is a young man who watches her with a sad expression, as he cannot tell her how he feels.

The song aims to capture the beauty not only of the girl but also of the whole landscape of Ipanema. Its smooth, flowing melody, and bossa nova-inspired rhythm reflect this aim. The lyrics of the song reflect the romanticism and simplicity of life, and how beauty can be found in everyday aspects. The song has become an iconic representation of Brazilian culture and music.

Gracias!!

Olha que coisa mais linda
Mais cheia de graça
É ela, menina
Que vem e que passa
Num doce balanço
A caminho do mar

Moça do corpo dourado
