01. Early 80's hardcore punk band closely linked to the Washington D.C. scene but actually hailing from nearby Columbia, Maryland. Often credited as one of the first bands to successfully fuse hardcore and heavy metal, this was mostly due to guitarist Bubba Dupree's unique playing style that somehow managed to merge the reckless abandonment of punk with the technical riffing of metal. Mostly ignored at the time, they did manage to gather a small cult following through their chaotic live shows that often ended in drunken mayhem perfectly mirroring their highly volatile music. Their recorded legacy consists of just fifteen tracks, three on the legendary Flex Your Head compilation of early D.C. hardcore and twelve more on a split album with The Faith, both released on seminal hardcore label Dischord. There is also an unauthorized CD of their early demos available. They also recorded an album for Touch And Go records which remains unreleased called Potion For Bad Dreams.

There actually is a reason for intrusive thoughts like this, the urge to jump, to harm yourself or someone around you. It reinforces your desire to not do those things by exposing you to the possibilities of what might happen if you did. When you get the urge to jump and it would be so easy for you to do it too, but you're horrified by what might happen if you actually did. Similarly, you might have the urge to turn into oncoming traffic while driving, or to punch someone for no reason, but you're frightened by what the consequences might be so not only do you not do it, you REALLY don't want to do it. Notice you never get an intrusive thought like "Eat all that ice cream" because the consequences are... oh no you just ate too much ice cream. Doesn't mean there is anything wrong with you, just that your ability to recognize danger and consequence is normal and healthy.

Yes I was going to post something similar. It's a consequence of the fact that if you have free will, you always have to option to sabotage yourself, so it's necessary that certain decisions are not possible to take lightly. Also, by considering a scenario when you are not in a pressure situation, you are better prepared to know where the line would be if you were in a pressure situation. Like if you had to turn to avoid something when driving, and one of the options was to turn into oncoming traffic. Your instincts are pre-honed for more complex situations.

The so-called "call of the void" is just height induced vertigo in those with an external locus of control.
Such people have little or no insight because insight requires an internal locus of control.
So they assume the height induced vertigo is a call to jump off the cliff.

The reason height induces vertigo in people not used to heights is because the sense of being physically balanced comes from the semicircular canals in the inner ear, proprioception, and from visual references on one's surroundings. Height removes visual references causing a degree of disturbance to one's sense of balance if one is not used to heights.

The sense of potential danger produces some cortisol and adrenaline release too, which those with an external locus of control experience as fear and anxiety.

I was on a cruise ship years ago. It was cold and foggy that day. I went outside to the railing and stared at the ocean below. There weren’t any people around. I had the strongest urge to jump and I didn’t know why. I grabbed the railing and started to shake. I’m in no way suicidal. It was like I was being drawn in by something. I like the theory that because the hunter/gatherer and kill or be killed lifestyle our ancestors lived, our brains evolved to look out for and worry about danger. I did an essay on this in highschool but when I researched it seemed to generally be a trigger for the fear of falling. Like if you're cleaning a knife and think of stabbing your hand or something it keep you alert against being stabbed by the blade and the same would apply to jumping off the cliff. For the statistic that the call of the void happens more with people who have high anxiety ot works even better because you're already well aware of the danger you could be in and when the call of the void triggers you can feel it even more and it'll happen more often. Most of this is speculation but from what I have seen it feels generally correct

When I was in grade 6 I was at a school camp weekend. On the 2nd day we went hiking, as we got higher, the more the urge to jump was getting stronger. Instead I decided to throw the water bottle I had with me, watched it descend, then the urge to jump went away and I continued hiking.

I recently moved into a house with 2 sets of stairs. They are steep to say the least. As I walk up the stairs, I am ALWAYS aware that if I simply lean backwards at the top of the stairs, I am done. It’s almost like an ear worm. I absolutely DO NOT want to fall down my stairs, but the fact that there is no wall or anything else behind me really starts to become a sensation. It’s not dizziness, it’s not a death wish…simply a nagging awareness. I think the last explanation makes the most sense to me. I'm not particularly depressed or suicidal but there are a lot of times where I'll think about certain situations that result in my death. "What if I just did it? What's stopping me?", for example, "The only thing that's stopping me from smashing into a semi-truck head on and probably dying, is this one little yellow line. So what if I just decided to cross it?" I'll think about how easily I could die if I made the choice to do so, and I think the same applies for heights as well.

It's called an intrusive thorght most people get them but regular people don't think about it theu just move on people with ocd an anxiety disorder will dwell on these thoughts and think they have meaning resulting in them looking for more thoughts and so thinking of it more causing more anxiety. As another theory, it's possible that when you are at a large height your brain cannot properly comprehend how far the ground is away, as it has never experienced moving in such a way. Naturally, it tries to imaging what moving to the ground would be like, so it can grasp the distance you would travel. You then feel like you want to jump, when really you were imagining jumping because you wanted to know what it would feel like.
It makes sense to me, and additionally, when I feel 'the call of the void' it's almost like I'm thinking "what would happen if I jump off of here." Which fits with the theory.

I have had this my whole life, I have never thought myself to be scared of heights but it has always felt like a calling. I would get sick to my stomach and have to move away from the edge because of my thoughts. After learning of this i was able to go to the edge of the rail at a mall semi comfortably, even at the mall i get the urge constantly and have thought i was suicidal this whole time.

The two that resonate with me most are (1) you are afraid of heights first and only after you consider the quickest way of getting down (jumping) you remember you're more afraid of dying than falling, and (2) which usually happens next, you have a minor existential crisis as your desire to prove that your choices are your own comes up against an easy and sure way to kill yourself, and you struggle with if staying alive is your own choice, or if you aren't actually in control; there is a desire to prove you are in control which conflicts with your desire to stay alive.

I wonder if the urge to jump down has anything to do with our primate ancestry. Living in a forest canopy, with 5 limbs to grip with rather than 2, and no artificially tall structures or hard concrete ground in existence, makes the prospect of surviving a jump from a high place much more likely. I would imagine that the impulse served many a primate in their quest to evade a predator. Just like covering our mouth, chest, and neck with our hands when we are in distress is a relic impulse from our primate ancestors, I theorize that the urge to jump is as well, because it WASN'T fatal to them. We then had to develop a counterimpulse which interrupts the impulse, because those who didn't would die and fail to pass on their genes. Both impulses happen before you realize it, and the conscious awareness that you could easily choose to die then creates the illusion that you had an impulse to kill yourself, but you didn't.

The irony is that he primate, for whom jumping down was a good option, they likely had no reason to fear heights. Theyd be happily perched up high, and only if some other situation peaked their anxiety would they jump. But we are afraid of heights, so paradoxically it is the fear of heights which triggers the urge to escape the situation by jumping.

A lot of intrusive thoughts seem to be: "small action - big consequence". That's probably why hair dye companies made a mint out of me when I was younger.
Call of the void feels like a fun little reminder of how close we are to death at all times. We're easily distracted by all this life stuff, so it's important to jog our memory from time to time.

That's exactly what I feel, the urge to take the quickest path down. I'm not afraid of heights, at least not that I'm aware of, but I do feel the urge to jump off of ledges simply to get to the ground faster. It's the same feeling I have when I'm lost in Minecraft, for example, and I just feel te urge to kill myself to get home faster rather than having to walk all the way back. That's why I stopped playing with keep inventory on, so I could challenge this urge. I feel the call of the void in many different situations, some in real life and some in the virtual world.

As a kid I've never had a fear of heights, neither do I do now. I remember this one instance of me trying to get a gaze of a street below a parking lot building I was in, whenever I got close to the edge, my body had every instinct and intention to go away from it. Safest feeling was when I crawled towards the edge instead of walking or crouching. Everytime a car passed, I had a bigger sensation to getting away from that edge. Closest thing to a dangerous instinct was whenever a car passed on the street I had a strong urge to jump infront of it.

To me the theory where it talks about the sudden realization of choice and free will is the one i find most accurate for myself.

If your a person with anxiety your brain is automatically going to ask all the what if situations. What if I fall, what if i’m pushed, what if i jump. What if i jump without wanting to. What if i lose control of myself and just throw myself off this cliff.

When your somewhere high up you face your own mortality in a way you dont often in other aspects of day to day life. Sure you could die doing anything in real life. I dont know how to explain it though besides, looking at the ground from a cliff looks like death.

People who aren't used to experiencing heights and standing on tall ledges, even if they aren't afraid of heights, will back away because the sheer intensity of the perspective leaves them afraid they will lose their balance. Losing your balance when in such a position would be fatal. So they step backwards. "They cannot trust themselves" isn't entirely wrong, it's more about that they cannot trust their own body to give way, worrying that perhaps their joints would simply collapse causing them to tumble like a sack of potatoes and having them fall to their death as a freeze response of fear.

It is not a newfound appreciation of life that they find when standing on a ledge, but rather it's just them instantly learning that it may be unwise to remain there.

As someone who has experience with heights and doesn’t have a fear of them, the original explanation works better for me. But that is a good explanation for others. I recently visited Canyon lands in Moab, UT, USA the cliffs were about 700-800ft tall and it was another 2,000ft to the canyon floor. Looking down, I felt stable. I could trust myself to stand, but the longer I looked the less I trusted my mind to not move my body and throw me off the cliff. Even though I was in control, I feared my mind. I backed away fearing that I might talk myself into doing it.

For me I feel like it's more of a morbid curiosity then a sudden urge that immediately dissipates. Like I'll look at the edge of a cliff, or some machinery and just go "huh, I wonder what it would feel like jump off that cliff/stick my hand in there?" When I was at AIT we would begin every Tuesday with a 4 mile run. Our Drill wanted our class to be resilient and the top ones. Shoot, I get this feeling all. the. time. Usually cliffs, buildings, even steep hillsides or things like that. For me though, I wish I had a parachute or a hang glider and could just run and jump off and survive the descent. Yeah, I'd definitely be the type to run out of the back of a C-130 Hercules all excited, maybe turning around or flipping or something because...why not? It looks super fun!

It does make sense though that the fear of falling once near the edge of a cliff or building is related to the manifestation of the fear of a lack of control or self esteem in some ways. I know my balance isn't exactly that of an Olympic gymnast, so walking close to the edge makes me feel I'll totally screw it up and tumble to my demise. However, I'd have really no fear of that if I was harnessed in or had a parachute. I'd be pretty much 100% confident at that point because any screw up in balance would have a way to rectify the error. And then, as mentioned already, I might just opt to jump instead of temp fate because the thrill and risk might be balanced with my chance of survival.

In Vsauce's video "Why Are Things Creepy?" he put a name on this phenomenon: "Cognitive dissonance". I recommend watching his video on it, he explains it very well. Some get this same feeling when having a 1 on 1 conversation and they're standing just a little too close for comfort, and experiencing an inexplicable urge to just punch them, for no apparent reason. Or another example is when you're standing over a cliff with somebody else, and having an inexplicable urge to push them off and/or jump off yourself. Not because you want to or would ever do it of course, but because your brain's fight or flight is telling you it's an option. Sometimes I get nervous around babies because I know they are so small and fragile, and I can't help but visualize how easy it would be to accidentally drop it, so it's easier to just step back instead of holding it, like explained in the video. Even though I know I won't drop a baby, I hold things all the time everyday, my brain still freezes up when presented with this situation, like somebody offering you to hold their baby. Another common example is while driving, you realize all it would take is to pull the wheel in one direction for just a moment and then it's all over. It makes us all seem a little psychotic even though it's normal to get these random urges as a result of our brain's common struggle with ambiguity and anxiety in certain situations. I think basically his explanation is that our brain can get cognitively overloaded when we realize we are in a potentially dangerous, high pressure, or awkward situation, and the immediate decision making part of our brain (fight or flight) is essentially short circuiting itself, knowing it has so much power with so little effort before it, even if it's totally contrary to what would be right or normal. This is my non-scientific paraphrase, but that's how I understand it.

Yes!! I have this badly with heights and it is why I am freaked by heights. I only feel it like this stuff, on a cliff, high balcony, etc. I dont feel fear of height when I am on a roller coaster or anything, so I know it isn't just a fear if heights in itself. The so-called "call of the void" is just height induced vertigo in people with an external locus of control.
Such people have no insight because insight requires an internal locus of control, so they assume the height induced vertigo is a call to jump off the cliff.

The reason height induces vertigo in people not used to heights is because the sense of being physically balanced comes from the semicircular canals in the inner ear and from one's surrounding visual references. Height removes visual references causing disturbance to balance if one is not used to heights.
The sense of potential danger produces some cortisol and adrenaline release too, which those with external loci of control experience as fear and anxiety.

That is why I have no problem with e.g. the Eiffel tower and other forms of height

I used to have this thought near constantly when I was at my worst, but it was jumping in front of an obviously speeding car. I couldn’t walk down the street near my house because it was so bad. I still struggle with OCD and other things but my suicidal ideations have left, fortunately

I used to have nightmares almost every night of being stuck in high places when I was in uni. Cliffs, skyscapers, anything too high to survive a fall from. It happened so often that I started to gain some lucid potential during them. I would understand that it was another one of these dreams and I knew the only way to wake up was to fall, so I'd have to psyche myself up to just let go of what I was climbing or run and jump off the edge, then I'd wake up. That has now turned into vertigo, and I can't go above about the 7th/9th floor in tall buildings now or I fall to the ground. I can't go near the edges of cliffs either. I feel a weird compulsion as though some freak accident will cause me to fall, or I may just run and jump off it myself.

The dreams themselves have stopped a long time ago. They're apparently a common dream in humans representing a fear of ambition. Climbing to metaphorical heights you may never be able to come down from. I guess it's true cos I passed my uni stuff and I now have a career, and the prospect of losing access to the money I've gotten used to does bring anxiety. Gotten used to a comfy life, but that's what I wanted for myself. Not to worry about bills and be able to buy things if I want to. I don't earn a huge amount of money, but my life is comparatively easier than a lot if people's. Especially those on or around the the breadline.

The dreams, before they stopped, even started to get clever. I'd be having a nightmare, for example, of running away from a horde of zombies and I'd be forced to take shelter in a skyscraper. I'd run up the stairs all the way to the top of the building and suddenly emerge on the roof, then the lucid thing would kick in and I'd realize I needed to jump. Ravenous dead behind me, long fall in front. Nothing to do but run and jump to wake up and get out of it .

For me personally, it's not like a suicidal thoughts by any means, it's more like this curiosity thing that goes like, "Would be hella cool if I can survive this 1000ft drop and experience that feeling of heading down head first. Raw"
