Leroy's Latin Lament
War Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The dreams we share,
The way we feel might be in our minds,
Another time.
But I try to make them real.
When we speak without words and touch each other′s soul,
Are we whole?
We set no time for love refined,
It could pass our fingertips,
Not noticed what's missed,
′Till our hearts are finished trying.
Oh, I long for your warmth.
Look back to that loving time we had

Tenemos much gusto, tenemos La Fiesta...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of War's song Leroy's Latin Lament are introspective and emotional. The opening lines, "The dreams we share, the way we feel might be in our minds, another time. But I try to make them real," speaks about the hopes and desires that we all carry in our hearts. It talks about how we aspire for a better future and try to strive towards our goals. The lines "When we speak without words and touch each other's soul, are we whole?" highlights the importance of a deep emotional connection that two people share. It talks about how verbal communication is not always necessary to understand and connect with someone on a spiritual level.

The lines "We set no time for love refined, it could pass our fingertips, not noticed what's missed, 'til our hearts are finished trying" is a reflection on missed opportunities and regrets in life. It describes how sometimes, we don't realize the value of what we have until it's gone. It sheds light on the importance of appreciating and cherishing what we have in life before it's too late. The chorus "Oh, I long for your warmth. Look back to that loving time we had," expresses the longing for something that is now in the past and can never be recaptured.

And you thought legendary, original harmonica player for WAR, LEE OSKAR, only played the harp. Here he is singing as well. Respect!

Saw War coming through Orlando International Airport in '85 where I was working at the time. I recognized Lonnie and asked when they started touring again. He said "we never stopped". He then took my name and told me to stop by the "will call box" at the place that they were gigging. Went to the spot and sure enough, I had two tickets waiting for me there. Took my wife in and I sung every song, word for word for the whole show. Then got to go back stage to meet the great band WAR!!!! Thanks again , Lonnie......

Fresno Calif 1979, outdoor concert on the campus of Fresno state. Tower Of Power opened for War, Lee Oskar played a 20 minute solo while the rest of the band took a break, when the rest of the band came back on stage he received a 15 minute standing ovation, the band could not start playing again until he came back on stage!

I think Leroy's Latin Lament is some of WAR's best work and that is saying a lot.

Wishing the awesome Lee Oskar a most Happy 65th Birthday on March 24th. Thank you for keeping it real all these years with your OG WAR brothers, Harold Brown, Howard Scott, BB Dickerson, even without the WAR name you gentlemen made famous. That's the definition of brotherhood. Play on LOWRIDER BAND aka WAR to those in the know.
