Introitus Requiem
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine;
et lux perpetua luceat eis.
Te decet hymnus, Deus, in Sion,
et tibi reddetur votum in Jerusalem.
Exaudi orationem meam:
ad te omnis care veniet.

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Introitus Requiem aeternum directly translate to "Grant them eternal rest, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. A hymn, O God, becometh Thee in Zion, and a vow shall be paid to Thee in Jerusalem. Hear my prayer; all flesh shall come to Thee." The lyrics are a plea to God for eternal rest and light for the deceased, a hymn of praise to God in Zion and a promise to make a vow to God in Jerusalem. The final line of the lyrics, "Hear my prayer; all flesh shall come to Thee" is a reminder that all living things will eventually come before God for judgement.

The introitus, or "entrance" of the Requiem, sets the tone for the entire piece. It is a mournful and somber composition, reflecting the medieval Catholic tradition of the requiem mass. Mozart's use of the Latin language in the lyrics adds to the timeless and universal nature of the piece. The haunting choral music, accompanied by the organ, is meant to evoke a sense of reverence and awe in the listener.

You know what same here. Because after hearing this track in the BBC documentary Rise of the Nazis that played this particular track, it just felt so powerful and symbolic.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart What about Missa Solemnis? I know it's not a death mass, but it is a mass

@marionkoetse3985

Please listen to The Great Messe in C minor ( Gardiner!!), that excels his Requiem, incredible beautiful ( there's no piece in the Requiem that is to compare with the outstanding " Qui Tollis" of the Great Mass)
