Ship in the Sky
Woody Guthrie Lyrics

(My Daddy)

Well, a curly-headed girl with a bright shining smile
Heard the roar of a plane as it sailed through the sky
To her playmates she said, with a bright twinkling eye
My Daddy flies that ship in the sky

My Daddy flies that ship in the sky
My Daddy flies that ship in the sky
My Mama's not afraid and neither am I
'Cause my Daddy flies that ship in the sky

Then a button-nosed kid, as he kicked up his heels
He said, My Daddy works in the iron and the steel
My Dad builds the planes and they fly through the sky
And that's what keeps your daddy up there so high

That's what keeps your daddy up there so high
That's what keeps your daddy up there so high
My Dad builds the planes and they fly through the sky
And that's what keeps your daddy up there so high

Then a freckle-faced kid pinched his toe in the sand
He says, My Daddy works at that place where they land
You tell your mama, don't be afraid
My Dad'll bring your daddy back home again

My Dad'll bring your daddy back home again
My Dad'll bring your daddy back home again

Don't be afraid when it gets dark and rains
My Dad'll bring your daddy back home again

Overall Meaning

The song "Ship in the Sky" by Woody Guthrie is a beautiful tribute to the workers and their children during the World War II era in the United States. The song starts with a curly-headed girl who hears the sound of an airplane and states that her dad is up there, flying that plane. This shows that children of workers during the war were proud of their parents' hard work and sacrifices.

In the next verse, a button-nosed kid explains how his father contributes to building the planes and helps keep them up there in the sky. The main message of the song is to reassure the children that their fathers are doing important work, and they will come back safely home after their job is done. The song conveys a sense of community, with children of workers looking out for each other and reassuring each other that everything will be okay. The song ends with a freckled-face kid saying that his father works where they land the planes and that he will bring their fathers back home safely.

Overall, the song "Ship in the Sky" celebrates the essential work of the fathers who were fighting and working for their country during the war. The song also humanizes these fathers by showing their work as integral yet dangerous, and their love for their families and their children. The song is a powerful representation of hope and strength during the difficult war years.

This song makes me cry. It reminds me of my beautiful pop who died about ten years ago. He built planes in WWII. His twin brother flew them. This song is so close to my heart because the children are saying 'you tell your mamma, don't be afraid, my daddy will bring your daddy back home again'. My pop's twin brother was killed, shot down and never made it back home again.
