New Life
Depeche Mode Lyrics

I stand still stepping on the shady streets
And I watched that man to a stranger
You think you only know me when you turn on the light
Now the room is lit, red danger

Complicating, circulating
New life, new life
Operating, generating
New life, new life

Transitions to another place
So the time will pass more slowly
Features fuse and your shadow's red
Like a film I've seen now show me

Your face is hidden and were out of sight
And the road just leads to nowhere
The stranger in the door is the same as before
So the question answers nowhere

I stand still stepping on the shady streets
And I watched that man to a stranger
You think you only know me when you turn on the light
Now the room is lit, red danger

I love their first two albums, even though for some reason they got a lot of bad reviews. Very naive and childlike, yes, but extremely catchy. Classic 80's synthpop.

A Broken Frame was a great album also, love these guys! Music for the masses

The difference was Vince Clarke wrote the first album, listen to the synth rhythms only he seems able to concoct. They are truly astounding. This was just pointed out to me, and I can’t believe I didn’t realize this before. It’s not just naive and poppy, it’s very masterful and rhythmically unusual! :-)

Speak & Spell is a good album with a lot of awesome synthpop tunes. You just need to disregard it from the bulk of Depeche Mode's catalogue to appreciate it better. Vince Clarke's lyrics can get naff but he's very much a pop songwriter whereas Martin's lyrics are more thought provoking and challenging. Then with A Broken Frame, the guys were trying to find a new sound after Vince left but hadn't really found their footing and it really showed on that album. Alan also hadn't joined the band so their greatness wasn't realised until around Some Great Reward or Black Celebration.

Your taste is excellent!

They were never the same once Vince Hill left. They went to their first appearance on Top of the Pops by train from Basildon to Fenchurch Street and then the Underground.
