Congratulations
MGMT Lyrics

Dead in the water
It's not a paid vacation
The sons and daughters
Of city officials attend demonstrations
It's hardly a sink or swim
When all is well if the ticket sells

Out with a whimper
It's not a blaze of glory
You look down from your temple
As people endeavor to make it a story
And chisel a marble word
But all is lost if it's never heard

But I've got someone to make reports
That tell me how my money's spent
To book my stays and draw my blinds
So I can't tell what's really there
And all I need's a great big congratulations

I'll keep your dreams
You pay attention for me
As strange as it seems
I'd rather dissolve than have you ignore me
The ground may be moving fast
But I tied my boots to a broken mast

The difference is clear
You throw it in your cauldron
Rust and veneer
Dusk and dawn, Steinways and Baldwins
You start with a simple stock
Of all the waste, and salt to taste

But damn my luck, and damn these friends
That keep on combing back their smiles
I save my grace with half-assed guilt
And lay down the quilt upon the lawn
Spread my arms and soak up congratulations

Nothing like seeing these guys live before heading over to the main stage and catching Weezer headlining. What a time to be alive

I finally realised what this video is about.
The whole video is a metaphor for how society treats famous people. If you listen to the lyrics its all about how fame causes you to disassociate from everything around you.
The creature in the video is 'ugly' representing how we view stars as something to gawk at. In the video Andrew and Ben are essentially its fans or managers, just following it with little input. When the creature first loses its leg that represents how fame causes you to no longer be able to stand on your own two feet. As they continue walking it eventually loses its mouth representing how others now speak for you. Eventually the creature 'slips' and its a down hill spiral from there. The 'fans' or 'manager' dont do anything to help they just watch. Eventually the creature can't go on but they force it to by physically carrying it to its death- where it can only look at what its become. They clap at the end like the creatures whole existence and suffering was simply there to entertain them.
Because in the end all you need is one big congratulations.

This entire album is really a big reflection of their success. They already struggled with signing a record deal as "The Handshake" talks about in their first full album.

One of their best songs IMO was from their EP, "Indie Rockers" back when they were truly indie. Once they signed their deal, they lose some creative freedom as the label wants something for the radio.

It ultimately sucks and is wonderful at the same time, to get signed. TOOL is my favorite band of all time. "Ticks and Leeches" shows what a label can do to your album with their financial influence. TOOL handled it great with that track. Mgmt handles it great with their tracks also.

I think you're spot on except the creature is their creativity personified.

No it's not that deep bro. It's just their personal experience. They only made the oracular spectacular songs as a dig at pop culture. They hated that stuff. And so after that album they did their own things musically. It's that.
