They say what we experienced as children makes us who we are, but maybe as adults we can take control over our own experiences, how they affect us, for good or bad, taking what we need and letting go of that we cannot benefit from. No one will ever understand the feeling, the dopamine hit I just got from this song. I've been searching for this song for at least 7yrs. So long I forgot what it even sounded like. It came out in a real fucked up time in my life and my perception of reality has for ever changed because of it. I lived in Tulsa and was fucked up beyond belief this song would slide in and out for about a year. A few years later late at night just the feeling of the song hit me like a ton of bricks. For the life of me I couldn't remember the lyrics and could barely remember the rhythm. I searched and searched never finding anything I remembered. I knew I would recognize it immediately when I saw it because of the rolling burning barrel. I was just scrolling through YouTube and saw the thumbnail and thought "do I know this?" Thank fuckin God I checked it out. Holy shit maybe it's just what I was going through at the time which creates this overwhelming feeling I just got from listening to this song. The searching and never finding this ever elusive remembrance of a past life that I was searching for and couldn't get back.... then this rush from hell finding it. I hope everyone gets at least one chance in life to feel the way I just did.

when i was 11 i heard this song on the radio while traveling with my family -- it was barely audible because the station we had on was started to fall out of range and was covered in static, so all i could really make out was was the lead synth melody.
i spent every other day for maybe half a year searching the web for it, and finally finding it was the most satisfying thing ever. oracular spectacular is a timeless record.

I feel like this song almost kind of represents sort of as you grow older, you begin to kind of look back at your childhood and possibly wish you had done things differently and possibly the people around you had done things differently.

I also feel like when you hit 18 or adulthood, a lot of your childhood begins to creep back into the way you go about things. So, in a way, it's a reminder to stay grounded and teach yourself discipline and respect yourself going through this process. And I think that can be as a simple thing as divorce or as complicated as physical child abuse. It's up to the listener, which is one of the reasons why I love MGMT.

@Ctrl-Alt-Del-U I agree, some people may not have faced the harshest treatment as kids. But the situation was not ideal. Admitting it stops us from repeating it in the future, most important, prevents us from normalizing the mistreatment or situation.

I was born 1993, so I love to see another 90s baby. To be honest, when I first heard the song, the first years of hearing the song it honestly didn't have any affect on me.

It wasn't until listening to the song in 2020, and looking up the lyrics did I realize its meaning. Before, I thought the ending chorus was "Enjoy yourself, take only what you need from him, A family of trees, wanting, to be wanted." but the lyrics are actually, "Control yourself, take only what you need from them, a family of trees wanting, to be haunted." and it completely changed the meaning of the song I knew for years because I didn't know the actual lyrics.

I don't think I've survived either of those things but the older I get the more I realise just how much shittier my childhood was than I ever felt prepared to admit. But admitting these things helps in the whole healing process so I've been working on it. I don't even really blame my parents, they were in a terrible place when I was growing up and I wasn't even supposed to happen (yeah they told me that explicitly), but it still hurts, man.

But let's talk about the song. I was halfway grown up when this came out (I came out in 1992) and it still feels nostalgic somehow even though I never listened to it. The central melody is just powerful.
