Running On Empty
Jackson Browne Lyrics

Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels
Looking back at the years gone by like so many summer fields
In '65 I was seventeen and running up 101
I don't know where I'm running now, I'm just running on

Running on, running on empty
Running on, running blind
Running on, running into the sun
But I'm running behind

Gotta do what you can just to keep your love alive
Trying not to confuse it with what you do to survive
In '69 I was twenty-one and I called the road my own
I don't know when that road turned onto the road I'm on

Running on, running on empty
Running on, running blind
Running on, running into the sun
But I'm running behind

Everyone I know, everywhere I go
People need some reason to believe
I don't know about anyone but me
If it takes all night, that'll be alright
If I can get you to smile before I leave

Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels
I don't know how to tell you all just how crazy this life feels
Look around for the friends that I used to turn to to pull me through
Looking into their eyes I see them running too

Running on, running on empty (yeah)
Running on, running blind
Running on, running into the sun
But I'm running behind

Honey, you really tempt me
You know the way you look so kind
I'd love to stick around but I'm running behind
(Running on) you know I don't even know what I'm hoping to find
(Running blind) running into the sun but I'm running behind

Thank you

Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels
Looking back at the years gone by like so many summer fields
In sixty-five I was seventeen and running up one-on-one
I don't know where I'm running now, I'm just running on
Running on (running on empty)
Running on (running blind)
Running on (running into the sun)
But I'm running behind
Gotta do what you can just to keep your love alive
Trying not to confuse it, with what you do to survive
In sixty-nine I was twenty-one and I called the road my own
I don't know when that road turned into the road I'm on
Running on (running on empty)
Running on (running blind)
Running on (running into the sun)
But I'm running behind
Everyone I know, everywhere I go
People need some reason to believe
I don't know about anyone, but me
If it takes all night, that'll be all right
If I can get you to smile before I leave
Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels
I don't know how to tell you all just how crazy this life feels
Look around for the friends that I used to turn to to pull me through
Looking into their eyes, I see them running too
Running on (running on empty)
Running on (running blind)
Running on (running into the sun)
But I'm running behind
Honey, you really tempt me
You know the way you look so kind
I'd love to stick around, but I'm running behind
(Running on) You know I don't even know what I'm hoping to find
(Running blind) Running into the sun, but I'm running behind

Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels
Looking back at the years gone by like so many summer fields
In sixty-five I was seventeen and running up one-oh-one
I don't know where I'm running now, I'm just running on

Running on, running on empty
Running on, running blind
Running on, running into the sun
But I'm running behind

Gotta do what you can just to keep your love alive
Trying not to confuse it with what you do to survive
In sixty-nine I was twenty-one and I called the road my own
I don't know when that road turned, into the road I'm on

Running on, running on empty
Running on, running blind
Running on, running into the sun
But I'm running behind

Everyone I know, everywhere I go
People need some reason to believe
I don't know about anyone but me

One of my very favorite singles from the 1970s - a Classic which sounds just as good a half century later!

@Luis Alcantara I just replied but wouldn't print. Thanks so much for your very kind thoughts. There are so many towns in TX that I had never heard of and still only know of the large cities and some of their suburbs. I see on the map that Tyler and Chandler are central TX and not south like Houston. Just knew they are very close to the border of Louisiana and family uses the Dallas/Ft Worth airport. We are bird watchers and have heard that parts of TX are top places in the US for great bird watching. Very limited where we are. We are right next to a vineyard which looks beautiful, but the ecology and habitat are completely destroyed. The many years of droughts and wildfires before recently have also wreaked havoc on everything. Now most of the birds have a flu virus called an avian Covid, and are dying in large numbers. Many of the growers have made pledges to be organic but not our very close next door neighbor.

@Luis Alcantara Your comment about your tank being half full is so funny. Where are you in S Texas? One of our granddaughters and her 2 step sisters who are all natives of Solano County, CA, live in SE Texas. Our granddaughter a few months ago at 19 became the youngest manager of a Domino's Pizza in Tyler, and she lives in Chandler. One of her step sisters was the youngest teacher hired at the high school in Chandler - she married her hi school sweetheart, and he teaches at the same high school. The other step sister went to Austin after high school and became an RN there.
