Jack & Diane
John Mellencamp Lyrics

A little ditty 'bout Jack & Diane
Two American kids growing up in the heart land
Jack, he's gonna be a football star
Diane's debutante, back seat of Jacky's car

Suckin' on chilli dog outside the Tastee Freez
Diane sitting on Jacky's lap
Got his hands between her knees
Jack he says
"Hey, Diane, let's run off behind the shady trees
Dribble off those Bobby Brooks
Let me do what I please"

Saying "Oh yeah
Life goes on, long after the thrill of living is gone"
Saying "Oh yeah
Life goes on, long after the thrill of living is gone"
They walk on

Jack he sits back, collects his thoughts for the moment
Scratches his head, and does his best James Dean
"Well then, there, Diane, we ought to run off to the city"
Diane says
"Baby, you ain't missing nothing"
But Jack he says, yeah

"Oh yeah, life goes on, long after the thrill of living is gone"
"Oh yeah"
He's saying "Life goes on, long after the thrill of living is gone"

Oh, let it rock, let it roll
Let the bible belt come and save my soul
Holdin' on to sixteen as long as you can
Change is coming 'round real soon
Make us women and men

"Oh yeah, life goes on, long after the thrill of living is gone"
"Oh yeah"
He's saying "Life goes on, long after the thrill of living is gone"

A little ditty 'bout Jack and Diane
Two American kids doin' the best they can

The line "Oh yeah, life goes on, long after the thrill of living is gone" becomes more and more relevant as I get older.

But i had the best summer vaccation of my life when i was 33. Better than ANY from my childhood or teen years or early 20s. So... You never know when will life surprise you.

This song, this line, popped into my head out of nowhere, and I thought exactly the same thing. I work with youngsters full of the joy of life, and I have no idea how to help them prepare for this realisation.

For me the words "suckin' on a chili dog" become more relevant as time passes

the fact that 80s music makes me feel nostalgic when i wasn’t alive then is crazy

Jai godfrey it’s nostalgic from the memories you have of it and people you associate with it

It's great to hear people that are teens and younger today still listen to and enjoy these songs. It means these songs will live on long after the generation they come from are no longer around. I have three teenage sons and I can't get them to pay attention when I'm playing the music I listen to for anything. I've even tried to let them play their favorite songs and really listened, paid attention and try to understand it. I won't trash their music, just because it's not my taste doesn't mean it's not good in it's own way.
