Writing's on the Wall
Sam Smith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've been here before
But always hit the floor
I've spent a lifetime running
And I always get away
But with you I'm feeling something
That makes me want to stay

I'm prepared for this
I never shoot to miss
But I feel like a storm is coming
If I'm gonna make it through the day
Then there's no more use in running
This is something I gotta face

If I risk it all
Could you break my fall?

How do I live? How do I breathe?
When you're not here I'm suffocating
I want to feel love, run through my blood
Tell me is this where I give it all up?
For you I have to risk it all
'Cause the writing's on the wall

A million shards of glass
That haunt me from my past
As the stars begin to gather
And the light begins to fade
When all hope begins to shatter
Know that I won't be afraid

If I risk it all
Could you break my fall?

How do I live? How do I breathe?
When you're not here I'm suffocating
I want to feel love, run through my blood
Tell me is this where I give it all up?
For you I have to risk it all
'Cause the writing's on the wall

The writing's on the wall

How do I live? How do I breathe?
When you're not here I'm suffocating
I want to feel love, run through my blood
Tell me is this where I give it all up?
How do I live? How do I breathe?
When you're not here I'm suffocating
I want to feel love, run through my blood
Tell me is this where I give it all up?
For you I have to risk it all
'Cause the writing's on the wall

Overall Meaning

Sam Smith's song "Writing's On The Wall" is a powerful ballad that is featured in the James Bond movie, Spectre. The lyrics are about the character's feelings of being lost and scared, but also hopeful at the prospect of finding love. In the opening lines, the character expresses their familiarity with falling and running but has now found something special that makes them want to stay. They feel the anticipation of something that could potentially end badly, but they are willing to risk it all for this love.

The lyrics "How do I live? How do I breathe? When you're not here, I'm suffocating," shows the character's emotional dependency on their love interest. They want to feel the love running through their blood and are willing to give everything up for the person they love. The chorus reinforces this sentiment as the writing on the wall is a metaphor for their destiny, that all they have to do is take the chance, and they will not be afraid.

The second verse describes the character's fears and anxieties that haunt them from their past. But as the stars begin to gather and the light begins to fade, they reiterate their courage not to be afraid. They believe that if they take that leap of faith, their love will break their fall.

Overall, the message of the song is about taking risks for love, facing our fears, and chasing our destinies. The song's lyrics are relatable as it highlights the vulnerability and anxiety that people go through in relationships.

I miss Sams old songs… I know this was the era to where their music was in a pure form of magnificence, without all the need for very showy and vulgarities.

The pure talent presented alone through vocals rather than appearance to appeal. There’s a lot more appreciation for the music itself.

just let them experiment for a while. As they get older they will probably go more to this style again, but let them enjoy their youth for now
