Silenced by the Night
Keane Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In a city like mine there's no point in fighting
I close my eyes, see you and me driving
If I am a river, you are the ocean
Got the radio on, got the wheels in motion

We were silenced by the night
But you and I, we're gonna rise again
Divided from the light
I wanna love the way we used to then

I lie in the dark, I feel I'm falling
Feel your hand on my back, hear your voice calling
I'm out of my depth girl, stick close to me
Because the people in this town, they look straight through me

We were silenced by the night
But you and I, we're gonna rise again
Divided from the light
I wanna love the way we used to then

'Cause baby, I'm not scared of this world when you're here
No baby, I'm not scared of this world when you're here

Oh, you and I, we're gonna rise again
Oh, you and I, we're gonna rise again

We were silenced by the night
But you and I, we're gonna rise again
Divided from the light
I wanna love the way we used to then

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Keane's song "Silenced by the Night" evoke a sense of resignation to the bleakness of city living; "In a city like mine there's no point in fighting." The singer turns to escapism, picturing himself driving with his loved one. The imagery of the river and ocean is utilized, highlighting their complementary relationship. The radio and movement of the car all indicate a tentative hope, despite the challenges present in the city.

Moving into the chorus, the song becomes more affirmative, with a sense of determination: "But you and I, we're gonna rise again." The past tense of "were silenced" is juxtaposed with the present tense of "we're gonna rise again", indicating a shift in perspective, from feeling powerless to actively working towards change. The use of the word 'divided' hints at the barriers that may exist, either within their relationship or external factors, that need to be overcome. The desire to "love the way we used to then" speaks to nostalgia for a better time.

The final verse explores a sense of vulnerability, with the singer admitting he feels out of his depth in the city. The phrase "stick close to me" reveals a sense of fear and a need for reassurance from his partner. In the last repetition of the chorus, the singer asserts that he's not scared of the world anymore, with the implication being that his loved one provides the support and strength he needs to persevere. Overall, the song is a powerful exploration of feelings of isolation and hopelessness faced in the modern world, and the importance of human relationships in overcoming those struggles.

@lesleyderamaut7682

That's because they make meaningful songs in a superficial world.

@chrislofkin3066

@tobymillett1841

Bloody cracker...

@rromeijn1

Keane is my nr 1 band. Have seen them 6 times and it was super every single time. I think they do not get enough recognition. The emotion that I feel whenever I listen to their music is unparalleled. They are the soundtrack of my life since hopes and fears. No other group makes me feel like they do. All songs are great but my favorites are: Myth, try again, bedshaped, he used to be a lovely boy, thin air and put the radio on. Keane forever !!!
