Born in Yalova to Turkish immigrant parents from Skopje, Macedonia, Ferah got her first guitar when she was in the first year in boarding at Bursa Namık Sözeri High School. She took lessons on the acoustic guitar, and during her second year she hired a studio with her friends and formed the group Pegasus. The group had their first stage experience during a rock festival in Bursa, in 1987. After a while, Pegasus disbanded. In 1988 with her four friends, Ferah formed Volvox, which was named after a microorganism that they had encountered in a biology lesson.
After a period during which she attended Middle East Technical University, studying economics in Ankara, she moved to Istanbul, where she attended classes on English language and literature at the Istanbul University. For two years she performed in various bars with Volvox, until they disbanded in 1994.
She released her first solo album, Kadın in 1996, and has gone on to release a total of six full studio albums, the last one being Benim Adım Orman, released in 2009. In addition to composing the music and writing the lyrics of every song in her albums, she occasionally sings on stage cover versions of work by artists of similar vocal qualities and style, such as Amy Lee and Skin.
On her third album, Perdeler, she collaborated with the Finnish cello rock band Apocalyptica.
Ferah's current group consists of Buket Doran (bass guitar), Metin Türkcan (electric guitar), Aykan İlkan (drums), and Ozan Tügen (keyboard), who have been performing with her in studio and on stage since her third album, Perdeler.

The overall tone of Şebnem Ferah's song "Bugün" is one of nostalgia and longing. The first line, "Bugün resmine dokundum ben öptüm yine yine" (Today I touched your picture and I kissed it yet again), establishes this by letting us know that the singer is thinking about someone who is not physically present. The following line, "Zaman ağır ol henüz erken demek için güle güle" (Time is heavy but saying goodbye is too early), implies that the singer is having trouble moving on from this person and perhaps wishes they could spend more time together.
The next couple of lines, "Sesini özledim, özledim çok haberim yok durmuş dünya niye / Seninle birlikte kaybolanları arıyorum başka şeylerde" (I miss your voice, I miss you, and I don't know why the world has stopped / I am looking for the things lost with you in other things), reinforce this theme of the singer trying to find meaning in life without this person. Throughout the song, the singer speaks directly to this person and asks them to return ("Gülümse bir kez benim için eğer duyuyorsan" - Smile once for me if you can hear me).
The chorus, "Aşk şarkısı değil bu geldi içimden / Nehrim ol gel ak yine kelebek ol gel uç yine / Çiçeğim ol gel aç yine / Rüzgar ol..." (This isn't a love song that I came up with / Come back to me as my river, flow again as my butterfly / Come back as my flower and bloom again / Come back as the wind...) contains more imagery of the singer wanting this person to return and be a part of their life again.
